I'd recommend a zipstick joystick if you can get one for a reasonable price as they are more responsive than the cheetah / quickshot 2 type ones , used to be cheap as chips few years back but prices on the zipsticks have gone silly last year or so :/
stock up on a few cassette players if you can , rather than altering the heads if a tape isn't loading just swap cassette players , have gotten pretty much everything to load with this method |

I have a few cassette recorders for c64 / vic20 I don't use them at all any more due to having a SD disc emulator.

As Vic says, you can get a 1541 disk emulator, there are also ways to play tap (tape) files in from a pc.
There is a unit here.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332839911334 First thing to do is tie back the ground lead or cut it off, as they can find their way into the ports of the machine. You will probably need to fit a new rubber drive belt, give it a chean, clean the head and possibly check the alignment. Cheers, Col

I think I have one. You can have it for free if I can find it. What you need though... what you really, really need... is a 1541 Ultimate: Edit: Just seen that you found one, cool.

i'm buying one of those this week, i been reading around about them and watching videos on youtube and they look ace. there are other different alternatives to that which are cheaper but they all end up lacking in certain features which the 1541 ultimate can do all of, compatibility is said to be 100% if anyone is interested here is a current thread about this stuff:

Yeah you've got the SD2EIC. When I had one I couldn't get multi-load games to work, which was a huge pain so I just went all-in and ordered the Ultimate. You won't look back. I keep an extra one as a spare, just in case :)

because they are not too expensive i have got 4 x c64's recently so i think i am covered for a while incase any die on me
![]() like your model i decided to only get 4 x the newer c64c models, as that's the model i had when younger and i have heard the breadbins are not as reliable - for one thing the chips in the c64c run cooler (as far as i know). of course many people say how great the SID chip in the breadbin models are, but again im actually used to hearing the music on the c64c's anyway, so personally im not bothered about getting a breadbin model with its fancy SID chip filters. (well maybe in the future if one comes up cheap i might but anyways...)
i strongly recommend you get one of these at the link below, i got one myself recently, otherwise you are taking a risk every time you power on your c64's: ps. and have a read of this below to see why you should get one of the above devices... ![]() |

yep u cant do anything with them like service them etc thanks to that resin crap commodore filled them up with
![]() when these PSU's die they usually kill chips in the c64 (the 5v voltage goes high in the PSU) some people these days make their own power supply, u can use (along with 9v AC) a modern 5v adapter instead as long as it is rated at 3 amps or higher to be safe. then if the modern adapter fails it isnt going to go high but instead just 'die' and not harm the c64 (or alternatively use the 'C64 saver' linked above so you can use the original c64 PSU's safely without worrying about damaging your c64.. that's what i do as i have 3 of the original c64 PSU's so will keep 'em running until they croak) ![]() ![]() Edited by joe34 - 12 Feb 2019 at 2:40pm |
