That's the normal playfield - look at the differences on the LE one.

It's a marked improvement on some of the more recent machines in that it's got metal ramps and generally much more stuff going on on the playfield - they're obviously responding to the Jersey Jack Pinball challenge.

It was designed by George Gomez, who designed the original Tron video game cabinet, see a short interview here with some pics. I think he also designed DoT.

To be honest, Transformers passed me by in the 80s, so the theme does nothing for me and the layout looks a bit unoriginal, and the playfield artwork is a complete mess, especially above the flippers in the centre of the playfield.

That said, I was really worried that Stern was going to produce a duff Tron because they announced it during their super cost cutting stage, but on my limited play time on it so far (one very short ball!), it seems like they've done a decent job on it and the art package is way cooler.

So, before I make proper judgement on XF, I guess I need to play it!

Now a Revenge of the Mutant Camels themed pinball, that would be good! Actually, a 2011 FPS RMC would be great also!

I'm in a similar boat really. Transformers utterly passed me by. I liked the films but not enough to be interested in a pin purchase. Besides, I'm skinit after the Tron purchase! Which is indeed a very cool game, yes. Very fast but clean and simple play field with a nice, challenging ruleset. It's fairly typical Steve Richie to be honest. Surprising since he wasn't on the project!

I've got a Tron LE coming from Europe at the moment.  I thought the art on Transformers was way too busy, it's a side effect of the super-detailed look they went with for the new films.  I'd actually have been more interested if it was based on the original way they looked, I had the comics as a kid.

The split colour art version looks fantastic though on the cabinet.
