    Posted: 10 May 2013 at 12:25pm

...Whilst i'm waiting on finding my IJ pcbs (garage is being emptied this weekend to find them if the weather holds!!)...

So I have been after this pinball like, FOREVER!! And then PaulS comes along saying he has one and he's not sure if he's going to ship it to the USA or not.

So after a 30 minute #ukvac IRC session we agreed a trade! And i'd of course drive up to help Paul load his container with some other ukvac and j+ guys.

Unfortunately I do not appear to have taken a pic of the pinball sitting in Pauls lockup - if anyone has one please load it up here!

Paul said he had it for 15ish years that he got from a trade. Anyhow it was sitting at the back of his lockup on it's end folded up, but didn't have either glass anymore. This meant 15 years of dust and dirt had settled on the playfield.

Anyhow, here's some pictures of loading it up.

So!

Overall inspection and condition assessment.

It had it's pcbs! (phew!)
Playfield and Translite glass was missing.
Translite was missing, but Paul had a repro one (and I have a NOS one ready)
No legs
The pin had been 'secured' once folded up with brown tape. Urgh. Leaving nasty brown tape marks everywhere.
The two lower rear corners of the backbox was damaged.
Missing Lockdown bar
Missing pinballs
Both trough opto pcbs are missing!

We get it back to Ravs unit and Rav gets it up on its legs and put a temporary lock down bar on it from a DE Star Trek.

The game fired up!

However it obviously has issues.

All rubbers have perished, leaving perished rubber all over the dusty playfield (playfield was wiped down with a cloth for this shot!)
One of the drop targets from the drop target bank is missing
All target decals are missing
Both flippers have issues - they stick on after firing
The ramps are dirty and marked.

Well this was the 30th April 2012.. I've just last week got it out ready to do a good shop and restore log on it. Nothing like the IJ, but worthy of making a thread for.

Stay tuned.

OK so here she is setup.

You can see some of the tape marks. Overall the cabinet is great! It's just the backbox rear lower corners that let her down! I am thinking of filling and colour matching (take the pin to B&Q LOL) But more on that later, let's get here stripped first.

The playfield with funky flippers

More detailed shots of the playfield

As you can see very dirty, and notable missing a drop target in the drop target bank.

Let the playfield strip commence!

Ok so let's take the playfield apart for a good cleaning.

Filth!

Getting there! I feel this is going to clean up nice! Big smile

The parts are off and the playfield screws and metal work go into the tumbler for a good polishing Tongue

Updates coming. Stay tuned.

Update!

The playfield has started to be polished and cleaned. It's not being clear coated as these Capcom playfields are so damn indestructable.

Work starts:

After:

More updates at the weekend!

Update

Well the game is done, w00t! I just need to fit a drop target and install the ball trough opto pcbs. I managed to find some repro ones here:

http://bayareaamusements.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=BAA&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=PC-A0015XXX-3R

I had been reading the original Capcom ones weren't great so I am glad I picked up these improved ones. More about the common opto issues on Capcom games here:

http://www.pinrepair.com/capcom/

So with that more picture pr0n.

The rails are the only thing that now let it down!! They have cleaned up but ideally needed blasting and re-plating. I can't afford to do that at the moment as brass platers are few and far between. In fact gold appears to be more common.

Seeing the rails are easy to remove, i'll either hold out for a NOS/recondition set or i'll do it later on.

So whilst i'm waiting for parts to arrive I got some better pix of these replacement ball trough opto pcbs.

The originals are on the top of each picture and are screened CAPCOM. These were prone to failure mostly due to bad design. The resistors would burn up causing massive overheating issues which would then affect the optos.

These new boards eliminate this design failure and also improve the design further with some enhancements.

On top of this I got some new translate glass shipped from Germany - it's the same stuff I used for IJ and is this anti-reflective Perspex stuff. It's officially known as 'anti glare glass', but isn't glass.

Just did a Pinball Heaven Order and have a brand new set of Chrome legs and bolts coming too

And finally got some pincab protectors to protect the cabinet from the legs. I went with dark blue as they don't do purple and I thought it would look the best against the colour of the cab and the chrome.

You can use almost any mildly abrasive liquid from Brasso 9remember Brasso!!) to T-cut, just make sure you use water to dilute it and also keep it cool from the friction!
