Hi, I’ve got an astro city that I love and mainly use it for CPS2 fighting games.

Would love to run MVC2 and SF Third Strike but not sure best way set up for it.

MVC2:
Been eyeing up a naomi, net dimm, pi set up but heard the JVS to jamma IO creates lag? Also looks like a tight squeeze.

SF Third Strike:
Looks like best option is to sink a decent amount of cash on a CPS3 pcb but heard they can be a little fragile/twitchy as well as pricey.

Any advice on what to look at or if anyone has done it would be hugely appreciated!

Both solutions are completely double-able for your Astro cab.

1) Naomi will definitely fit in Astro but it’s best to get Naomi mounting brackets so you can mount it to the MDF game board. Capcom I/O board would probably sit on base of the cabinet and you could run a cross-over Ethernet cable + bespoke power cable to power the PI and leave the PI under the control panel to change games.

Naomi would need to be set to output by 15khz on dip switches as I believe Astro city monitor only accept this.

You can power the PI using CN12 connector on Naomi for power.

Only issue I’ve heard is Net Dimm can have issues as it cannot receive enough power from Capcom I/O so needs another power source to Naomi if not mistaken.

Regarding the lag question unfortunately I’m not sure about this myself but if your interested I’ve got assembled Naomi kit I’m looking to shift as I don’t use it enough anymore.

2) CPS3 board would fit with no issues but as you mentioned it’s expensive board and the boards themselves are 90% just an exposed PCB game board (there was enclosure for it but it seems these are rare to find).

Getting Darksoft CPS3 board is best route so you don’t have to worry about suicide battery business and would have all CPS3 games available.

Safest way to mount this would be to get some Motherboard PCB feet and mount CPS3 board to the MDF board. CD-ROM drive will probably have to rest on the base of the cabinet as I ain’t seen mounting brackets for these drives but I’m assuming there most be some 3D printed ones somewhere.

Just to add TR Fighting company make CPS3 custom shells for it that I believe is compatible with SCSI2SD PCB which is a board that simulates CPS3 CD-ROM image by SD card and replaces the need of the CD-ROM drive. Which also can be mounted to MDF board by PCB Feet.

P.S As you play CPS2 games the kick-harness for CPS2 is also compatible with CPS3 board 👍🏼

Any questions do ask :)

I've always wondered why third strike was never ported to Naomi, since the DC version was pretty great.
There was Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3: Upper, though ... I believe.
So you can at least get an easy win there ...

Oh really, yeah the dreamcast version is ideal. Is it difficult to connect to a cabinet?

I guess you’d have to be able to display 480i so you can see when to button press to drop down to 240p. Probably not a practical solution for a cab.

Well, there's plenty of Dreamcast to NUC conversions out there.
Plus, there are 15khz switched outputs, too.

However, with SF3:TS it's a matter of forcing it with Start+L (or Z on arcade stick):
I dare say that you could run a Dreamcast dedicated to SF3:TS for less than the hardware, and also find a way to ensure that it boots 240p every time.

It looks like there are folks trying to force 240p only for SF games, too ...
I can't go down the rabbit hole for you (I'll get lost) ... but ... it looks like a rabbit hole worth delving down one's self and reporting back ... because I would TOTALLY do this myself. :)
