I think these days the artists don't make a huge amount of money from album and single sales, its pretty much accepted that most people will either not pay, or they will use a service like Spotify (or hacked Spotify if you are on Android), which pays the artist next to nothing.
Most of the money is made from concert ticket sales, which is why they are so expensive these days. That is how I personally give back.

Given that so many concerts are now being cancelled due to obvious reasons and that money source dries up, it will be interesting if the spotlight returns on illegal downloads again.

Could always buy the music ronnie and support the artists?

I download lots of music from unofficial sources and have subsequently purchased hundreds of CDs guided by these downloads.

However, the majority of the CDs I have bought in the last ten to twenty years have been second-hand (some have been sold several times). This means that no royalties from these purchases ever reach the artists.

Buying second-hand media is legal but has the same financial effect as illegal downloads.

Double standards, anyone?

That works for big artists but for smaller indies who dont even play live still need support.

Spotify payouts are terrible yes. But as a small example the small amount i get allows me to put fuel in the car, or buy some food for my family. Its not very glamorous at the lower end.

My fanbase you can probably count on fingers and toes but a lot of them buy a cd vinyl cassette or minidisc as they know it means that artists can continue to write and make more music. It has a knock on effect as well, if i know im gonna sell a few im more inclined to pay an artist to do the art, or pay a mastering engineer which puts grub on there table, then the small duplication companies get work pressing copies, deliverymen get paid to deliver, bandcamp take there share which keeps them going and paypal takes a slice.

I hate whats happened to the industry. Some of my favourite bands only release new music every 4 years now as theres no incentive really. That sucks.

Greedy bastards the industry who have been ripping people off for years with 14 quid cds. Now they are practically giving peoples music away to sell tickets and merchandise.

I really think tho that if you want to hear more music give the artists some money, most of the time a bandcamp download is less then a frappucino from starbucks.

My mate got banned from Napster because he was sharing what he had downloaded, Bobby Brown I think

That was crap anyway after a couple of years, Audio Galaxy was the best then

we were rarely downloading new music anyway, most of it was all old, 80's and early 90's stuff. If you can't buy it from shops how can you listen to it, so if they don't bother to repress Records or Sell on CD you can't buy it so they ain't loosing any money are they?

One thing I would like to know

If it's illegal to download music, if you can only buy it on Vinyl and it's now rare like the N-Joi - Anthem EP White Label I got from ebay after some kind guy told me who the other two tracks were also N-Joi

They only Pressed about 100 of them, so once they have sold them or gave them away, when someone is asking £100 or more probably now for it, how is that not worse than downloading it, if you can't buy those tracks anyway, the band don't get any money from 2nd hand Record or CD sales, so really no music should be sold 2nd hand and dealers are making a fortune

If someone downloaded it, then it saves dealers making money

All nonsense if you ask me

I've done the same sometimes, If I liked it that much I've bought CD's even though I had it downloaded

You can rip the MP3's from Youtube and the quality is good enough on many now so why are they on Youtube

Same with DVD's, there are loads of people selling TV Series on Ebay or websites of anything that's not out officially on DVD. Auto-man series was regular DVD-R sales on ebay and they finally release official DVD, I'd still seen idiots buying the copies from TV recordings after Offical ones out

There are still loads of films you can't buy on DVD let alone Blu ray

Guy is selling 3D of Friday 13th 3-D on ebay other week because it's still not been done on proper Blu Ray 3D yet they have done Amityville and Jaws now

Just don't get how people can profit from older CD Singles like ACEN and no money they make goes to band but you can't download it even though can't buy it

My brother was telling me Xmas day I should have music amazon do, millions of songs you can play from anywhere, everything is on there

I said put on MC Lethal - The Rave Digger yeah here I've Lethal MC nah that's not it MC Lethal, nope nothing

Try 6 Bells All - Me The Mailman

Nothing, so what a load of rubbish that is should of asked him to see if Bug - So What was on amazon music, found that in a load of CD singles from Tip, what a top track that is. one of my favs

I've still got quite a few mixes and tracks I cannot Identify who the Artist is after 20 years of looking, everyone is saying I can't find it just play it and I'll use Shazam app on my phone, that tells you everything, so we play them, nothing found, another nothing found

It's alright if you only listen to pop music

Radio Stations annoy me, just play the same crap all day everyday

Really good bands, artist never get played

Radio 1 never hardly played The Beloved and they were flippin ace, I kinda like it that way though

SoulseekQT is where I get music from. If I like it I'll then pay for it to be legit. The smaller artists get my money as they need it much more.
