Hi everyone.

Myself and ‘Mcbear’ have been working on a little something that we thought might be of interest to you guys. In 2018 we are planning on opening a new Retro Arcade Bar/Cafe in central Bournemouth called ‘Zaps’.

We’ve already managed to source a number of cabs and we’re looking at having approximately 25 running on site with a few spare so we can swap them in and out every few weeks (or as they inevitably break down, whichever happens first).

We’ll run the machines on tokens which can be purchased over the bar.  We’ll also be serving coffee/hot drinks during the day along with some lovely craft beers through the afternoon and evening. Of course there will also be those all important snacks to help keeps those gaming energy levels up.

It’s all a bit of a big jump for us. We’ve actually left our jobs in order to do this but we feel it’s something that is lacking down here on the south coast so we’re happy to step up to the mark. We’re looking forward to building a nice hub for the retro gaming community and anybody else down here in the south who wants to try out some old school arcade machines. So far it’s been great meeting some of the local cab collectors who have helped us with building our collection. We also couldn’t have done this without UKVAC as a whole as we’ve cribbed all kinds of useful information and support from here that has helped us along the way (thanks everyone). Also huge thanks to Fatsgt and James @ RGP for helping us with sourcing/fixing cabs from abroad and of course to Martin who has been great with making multiple trips down south to drop these machines off.

We have a website up and running, you can check out our list of games on there along with a few blog posts detailing our misadventures with fixing some of these cabs up.

You can find it at - www.zapsco.com

We’re also on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, you can find us at...

https://twitter.com/ZapsCo

https://www.instagram.com/zapsco/

https://www.facebook.com/zapsco/

Before you ask, we don’t have an opening date at this stage. We’re still waiting on our licensing and planning to go through and then we have all kinds of other details to sort out but once we know, you’ll know.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers.

Hope all goes well for you. Good range of cabs. How much will a token cost in real money?

Well, not really, Arcade Club being a dedicated arcade with a one-off entry fee and then with all games set to free-play. So there is definitely room for another Arcade Club south of London (which this obviously isn't). I hope this place does great numbers though, but would imagine the price-per-token will be a fine line to walk in order that the cabs earn their keep. A place like this isn't something I'd make a dedicated trip to, but would of course be delighted to discover / make a beeline for if I was visiting the area. Just a view.

Thanks for the comments guys. At this stage we're still working out the token costs. The idea is that the more tokens you buy the better value you get per token.
We did think about the Arcade Club model but it's not something that can be applied to our venue given the location. It's more of a social spot where people will want to drop in like they would a normal cafe or bar.

All the best with this venture.
Just out of interest, what sort of licence do you need to operate video games?

They are not gambling machines so we don't need a licence in that respect. We've been advised that we may need to sort something out with the PRS with regards to the music for each machine. That's on our to-do list.

Hi Andy.

We were going to say hi but you looked a bit busy when we saw you. We love Arcade Club, it's totally worth the 4+ hour journey from Bournemouth. It's also the reason why Mcbear now loves Outrun 2. Thumbs Up

Thanks Andy.

If we manage to squeeze in another trip to Arcade Club between now and when we open we'll be sure to say hi.
Cheers.

This is a great idea and something I have considered but not brave enough to take the plunge.  Really hope it goes well and I will be visiting when it all comes together.  Happy to promote to my followers on twitter, I have around 8,500 half of which are UK based.

Good luck!

Great idea, lovely range of machines too! I'm sure you'll get the bar right (the most important thing) and make quite a spot for a wide range of people.

Thanks for the positive comments and support guys. Glad you're also approving of the selection, we've tried to get a good variety so we can cover as many bases as we can.

@virtvic, a mention on the 10p podcast would be awesome. Happy to drop you a PM.
@RolyRetro any shout outs on Twitter would be brilliant. We're steadily building up our modest follower count. It's definitely my preferred choice for interacting with people.

Good Luck guys, it is a lot of hard work and soo many things to deal with/think about, Get yourself a decent fit-out contractor who knows the commercial regs.

I haven't been to Bournemouth for many years so can't comment on the location, but looks to be in a decent location/town centre.  Are they classrooms for the international school above you?   Much better than residential as you have less to worry about.

Get some fit out pics up to show how it comes along, would be nice to see how you get from the below to the finished article:
