Hi,

I've got a quote back from my local powder coaters on the following Sega driver items. They've come back with £300+VAT which is a lot more than the quotes I've had in the past. Is that expensive or just how things are now?

Pedal upright: 43cm high x 18cm deep x 43cm wide
Chassis I/o panel: 15cm high x 29cm wide x 5cm deep
Under seat panel: 28cm wide x 20cm long
Pedal base: 2cm high x 53cm wide x 37cm long
Seat frame: 50cm long at base extending to 64cm at top x 46cm wide at base x 55cm high
Monitor bracket: 7cm deep x 6cm height x 78cm wide
Rolling chassis: 20cm high x 150cm long x 54cm wide
Seat base: 55cm wide x 55cm long x 8cm high

This is only 80% of one side of the twin I'm restoring so the full cabinet will come in at around £700+VAT???

If the above is expensive, can anyone recommend a good (and cheaper :D) powder coaters in the Kent area, please?

Many thanks,
Rob

For what it's worth, that's pretty much what I ended up paying for the base unit and all doors of a Naomi cab. Think it was £270 in the end. They did a great job, mind. One thing to bear in mind is that if you end up using different services for the metalwork and plastics, make sure they spectrograph or at least promise to colour-match it or you'll have a two-tone cab which inevitably, given that you cared enough to powder-coat it the first time, will do your head in to the point you end up doing it again.

I'm torn tbh because the cabinet is extremely rusty so I doubt the finish will look fantastic anyway, but the idea of sanding and prepping all the parts myself isn't something I really want to do. Maybe I could just do the chassis and pedal area parts for now and leave the rest. Or put it together as-is and have a one-of-a-kind Steam Punk Daytona?! :D

Sounds like there's a fair bit of prep work to do so price sounds good to me. If someone offered me 300 quid just to do the prep work, I'd say no. Lol

Yeah, I guess. But 700+VAT all in isn't something I can get past the better half at the moment so some selected sanding and repainting might be a better bet :(
It's a shame the lighting in the games room is so dim. All this effort and you'll hardly see it :D

If they are to shot blast the parts and do any necessary cleanup afterwards then prep and powder coat then yes it will be more expensive. Also as mentioned above, keep to the same place as you may get colour variations. Will be a bit cheaper if you do the cleanup work yourself, but they still have prep work on the parts before powder coating or you'll get a rubbish finish.

If you've used them before and gave a good job, at least you'll know what to expect, or opt to just use rattle cans, though you may be surprised just how expensive they've become now as well.

I paid £300 to have a Nintendo cocktail tub shot blasted and powder coated. It looks good too. I was told it would cost more if I did it again. Guy under-estimated the work involved.

I guess my problem is that I'm seeing the cab as one machine whereas it's actually 2 so the work / cost is doubled...
£300 for a cab would be great, except I wasn't pricing up the whole cab...
I've put the feelers out to another couple of companies to see what they come in at.
Failing that it'll be time to roll my sleeves up.
Cheers for the feedback guys.

May have found somewhere cheaper after scatter-gunning emails off to 6 other places... Going on the pics on their facebook page, they do very good work. And this bloke's not mentioned VAT... :sneaky:

If the metal is pitted, don't get it powdercoated. It looks even worse after, and then you have to fill over pitting and paint, which then was a waste of powdercoating. I always use aurora powder coatings in farnham surrey.

The rust is extensive but not deep so touch wood it'll be OK

I'm getting 90% of both sizes of the twin done for £350 inc VAT
I'm missing a couple of bits which they'll do separately when I've sourced them.

Cannot wait to get this up and running now. I've been concentrating on some of the non-metal bits for a while and hopefully it's going to look fantastic: -

Yeah, deeply pitted metal can look bad after powder coating, though I've had a bit of success stripping and using a thick primer to help fill in the damaged impressions, then powder coating the top coat.

Just on small parts with a cheap eBay spraying unit and an old oven with the fan removed. I've even seen guys powder coating MDF. Never tried it yet, but looked interesting.

There's also a caustic dip I've seen done with special nano powder that enables the paint to seep into the micro pores left by the dip so the paint is partially impregnated into the metal surface, similar to other metal finishes.

Just a quick update on this...

The metalwork arrived back from the powder coaters yesterday and it's looking fantastic :)
There's some pitting on a few of the pieces where the rust was substantial but I'm really happy with the overall finish.
Not at all bad for £350!

Very nice looking.

Did they chemical remove the old paint and rust beforehand or just shot blast the whole thing?

That's a fair amount of parts for £350.
