They are not the same. Almost certainly unrelated. Tax is supposed to be used for things like your bin being emptied and roads and NHS stuff. I'm no expert and most likely wrong but it's Monday and that's what my brain says. Who gets paid in cash any more either?

If you printed money to replace taxation, inflation would spiral out of control pretty quickly, which would bankrupt us all. In short, things would get pretty fucked, pretty fast.

Tax is (now) a means to give the worthless printed money a perceived value. If you have to fight to keep as much of it as you can then the effort you put into that battle is giving you a sense of worth for this FIAT money. Plenty of economists point that out, loads of videos on youtube about it all.

It wasn't always like that in years past, sure governments did raise their income via taxes to operate the country but that's long since been disconnected thanks to technology and information control. We on the streets are not seeing the advantages of the digitally printed magic money because we're well outside the feeding trough.

Basically since 1971 the world financial system and the value of the pound in your pocket has been on an exponential downward spiral.

This is a fun website:

I would also say that despite the worthless money the standard of living is massively better than it was in previous generations. People's expectations are just much higher

The whole Financial System is Clown World in itself and already out of control since they stopped money being gold backed and introduced credit

"Banking has been in existence since the first currencies were minted and wealthy people realised they needed a safe place to store their money. Ancient empires also needed a functioning financial system to facilitate trade, distribute wealth, and collect taxes. Banks were to play a major role in that, just as they do today"

So what I hear basically happened is, when coins in old days were gold and silver they didn't want to carry them around, so some setup a secure place they could leave them and gave them vouchers in place, they were happy trading the vouchers for food etc and hardly went back to collect the coins, some clever folk realised this and thought, we could lend this money to others and charge for the service making money out of nothing, just like today's Banks

Keep telling you in the news people starving, more than ever at food banks, did we have food banks in the 70s/80s I don't remember or need free school meals!?! what in 2024 with everything being so rosy, seems it's worse than when we grew up, we didn't get free school meals.

If everyone went to the Bank and asked to withdraw what the computer screen says you have, the whole world would collapse because there isn't that amount of money. was thinking last week, when all these shops close like Wilko's and now Bodyshop they tell you about all the job loses, one of the key talking points, firstly i've not hardly seen a mention on TV of all the banks closing and they never say that's 1000's more job loses like they don't wanna point it out for some odd reason

Frankie Goes To Hollywood seemed to have an insight what might happen to future jobs in Lunar Bay song, or who ever said here throw that in at the end, 1985 so how did they know?

In the common age of automation, where people might
Eventually work ten or twenty hours a week, man for
The first time will be forced to confront himself with
The true spiritual problems of living

But it's not all bad, there is always money for War and Big Pharma Products which is when they seem to just be able to print as much money as they want

You know what really makes this a clown world?
Someone not understanding things enough to think saying that 'if we can print money why do we get taxed?' is a valid point.

It's as bad as creationists not understanding evolution enough to think saying 'If humans evolved from monkeys why are there still monkeys?' is a good point.

learn the subject you are mocking before saying these things.
Do you REALLY think others wouldn't have thought of it before if it's such a good idea?

I'd like to know why our government don't have money for war veterans on the streets and many others born in the UK but can find as much money as they wan't for immigrants in hotels, funding 2 wars and we don't even get asked what they want to do with all the collected tax racket money from us.

They have printed more money though and what backs the money these days?

I'd be worried about Bail in's and who owns the money when you pay it in the bank, because you don't anymore!

From the Guardian.com, someone else asking the same question

ROOT OF ALL EVIL

With all the "credit crunches" why don't the governments just print more money?

Toni, Northern Ireland
  • They did print some more; it was called "quantitative easing". But it is a very slippery slope; printing more money makes it worth less,
  • which leads to inflation, which can get out of control; this has recently happened in Zimbabwe, and famously happened in Germany
  • between to wars, when the value of money dropped daily and peoples' savings were wiped out almost overnight. In fact, probably mindful of this, there was a German plot to destabilise Britain's wartime economy by introducing billions of pounds of forged banknotes.

    John Ramsey, St Martin, Guernsey
  • For the same reason that you can't get away with giving everyone IOU's instead of currency based on work you've done. People stop taking them after the first couple.

    Pete, Cambridge, UK
  • Each country has an economic value and money is just a portion of this. Printing more money will soon greatly reduce the size of this portion and won't have solved anything. This is why forgers are so dangerous.

    Sam Bobden, London England
  • Money is not real anyway, so printing more of it would make no difference to the actual wealth of a country. It would simply redistribute that wealth slightly in favour of whoever is doing the printing, whether it be forgers or governments. Seems to me it would be a fantastically cost-effective and practically free to administer form of blanket, and therefore fair taxation.

    Aaron Wilde, Hastings England
  • Aaron says inflation is a 'fair' tax because it hits everyone. This is far from true - printing money redistributes from people who hold money (in cash or bank accounts) to people who have debts, say a mortgage on their house, or an overdraft. It helps debtors (including the government) but it hurts savers (for example, people putting money aside for their pensions). This is certainly not a fair tax!

    judycorstjens, BoisleRoi France
  • Printing more money would mean the price of commodities soaring up to meet the demands. The amount of raw material available for production will be the same or lesser in time. Therefore printing more money isn't exactly the solution for increasing the national wealth.
