I love my Quest 2 and although I have vr capable PC it is far away from my router and the room the pc is in is small so I just play Quest 2 games in the living room.
I bought the elite head strap and it is way more comfortable than the one that comes with it and you get the extra battery life too. I know you said that 2hrs is enough but believe me there will be loads of times he forgets to recharge it so that extra battery life can be a god send.

Is it ok on your eyes ?

I would like to get this but
Not sure if it’s just that I have sensitive eyes
Maybe it’s just me..
I get motion sick if I’m not driving the car as well.
Unfortunately I think my heads just not right for the motion side of vr.

Short bursts are great though Retroman8392022-12-12 19:01:35

I've had Oculus Rift, Quest1 and now a Quest 2. I play mostly Steam games on it, and you can get away with WiFi 5. so long as you have a good clear line of sight and no interference, if its not ideal then the image quality struggles, just like youtube reduces its resolution. if its really poor then you'll also get latency which will end up ruining the fun or making you throw up!

The official Quest 2 USB C cable is 5m long and very light as it using fiber optics for the signals and can charge the headset at the same time, you can absoltely use a decent 3rd party one but they will be heavier and may struggle to charge the headset while using it, my 3rd party one, can just about supply enough voltage to keep the headset at the battery level it started with, it also has the benefit of the lowest latency and best image quality.

there are quite a few options for head straps now, the basic one is not comfortable for long pla, for me anyway. I use a  ViVe head strap, and very happy with it.

Finally you'll need to install the oculus software onto the PC with steam on it. I've heard about a 3rd party software hack that does away with the meta / facebook / quest signin and allows you to direct connect it to Steam. but not tried it yet.

If you can add a wifi 6 access point into the room it will be used, thats your best option!

?

When you say clear line of site do you mean practicality in the same room as modem / router. This is my issue, as its in the next room. I can get an ethernet to the room so if an ethernet based booster exists then I can adapt, my son really wants wireless on this.

Yes clear line of sight, 5Ghz / WI-FI 6 uses higher freqnencies than 2.4Ghz this gives it much better speed but the range is impacted by things in the way, old houses have thick walls, new houses tend to have metal in the walls, foil on the insulation. so for optimum bandwidth, range etc clear line of sight is always best.

If you can get an ethernet cable to the room, then a Wi-Fi 6 access point will be ideal

i use one of these, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubiquiti-UniFi-Lite-Access-Point/dp/B08T6CKG5B

but you can get cheaper ones. be aware that you will need a poe injector (Power Over Ethernet power supply) for that type of access point. unless you have a POE switch. which ever you decide to buy, set up the AP with its own SSID and password so that iits used only for the Quest to get the best possible speeds from it.

Also you want to make sure the PC is wired too, at the point you might as well install a small switch, New Ethernet cable to the new switch (with POE) a cable to the PC and another one to the access point (using one of the POE ports) something like this would do the job https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-SG1005P-Ethernet-Configuration-Required/dp/B0769C24T1/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3BOX91EZS6L4O&keywords=poe+switch+4+port&qid=1670856219&sprefix=poe+switch%2Caps%2C755&sr=8-4

This explains lots that I have read before on Google but didn't quite understand, from your explanation I understand the poe and injector and the wifi 6 with 5ghz . Will defo look into this. Basically this method is an ethernet extension to a wifi 2nd base by the sounds of it ?
Thanks big10p , brilliantblue ,tronads ,john Bennett, Brettster, _matt_ , for all valuable time to post info. Lots to look into and will get a solution.

Short bursts are great though

I got a Quest 2 a year ago and I was also a bit worried as my eyes are sensitive to bright lights and I get headaches easily so I started off playing games like the 3 Star Wars games that you use the teleport system to move around (or move around under your own steam depending how big your room is) and Eleven ping pong and I had no problems at all with nausea. However as soon as I started getting more adventurous playing stuff like the walking dead and Pavlov were you use the thumbstick to navigate smoothly around the game it was knocking me sick. I tried short bursts to get used to it gradually but the nausea and headaches including one really bad one made me take a long break from it although looking back I probably was going to fast to soon as it's common for people to take quite a while to get their vr legs.

I've recently given it another try and I'm strictly staying away from smooth locomotion, at least for now.

Currently playing Superhot which is just incredible and Resident Evil 4. It's worrying how much I love removing heads from shoulders with a shotgun!

So far I haven't had any problems with nausea on games without smooth locomotion I'm happy to say.

To be honest I'm still blown away by VR every single time I play it. I can't believe how well it all works and how instinctive and accurate and real shooting guns or playing table tennis feel for instance, it was so much better than I ever expected. I highly recommended it

I've heard ginger supplements helps with motion sickness. I'm lucky and don't suffer from it, but driving games can make me a bit queasy, but I think that's the complete lack of g-force confuses my brain.

Absoloutly the smoothness that makes me sick too

Also if I read it play a handheld game console
In car or train 2-5min and in feeling sick /dizzy / disoriented

Smoother the car or train the sicker I am..
When I was a kid at the future entertainment show London
old school V.R. Had me throwing up in the corner …
But sega R 360 and things that actually chuck you around all over like at the fair I love
And have no problem with at all..
As soon as motion is just outside of my persived sphere or
Created artificially.. my head and guts are spinning like a washing machine..

Maybe like you said shakeyness motion in game is the answer to cure the motion sickness

Yeh I heard about the ginger thing as well ..
Never tried it so can’t say ..
But looking straight out the windscreen as a passenger in car or train
And the sickness passes in 30 sec or so
And I can go back reading and im sick again same 30seconds

Yes I tried ginger but it didn't help, now when I think about ginger I feel a bit sick. It was my own fault. I've watched more vids on it now and apparently the key is to stop playing before you start to feel even a bit queasy even if it's only 10 minutes then do the same the next day until you're brain gets used to the fact that you are moving but your legs aren't. It can take weeks for some people. I was staying on until I started to feel a little bit sick then jumping off which is the wrong way to do it.

I've been giving the Kat walk c2 vr treadmill some thought recently as I way to play the more intensive smooth locomotion games. I may look into it next year, would just need to sell a load of consoles games I don't need to pay for it.
