I fancy giving golf a whirl but I don't want to spend silly money. There is a course up the road that is pay to play and has a driving range but I don't know what to do about clubs.

I was looking on sports direct and I can get a half set of Irons, driver, wood, hybrid and putter
For around £115 to get me started. Or would it make more sense to look for better second hand clubs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There are driving ranges where you can just turn up - might be worth a try first.

I was dragged around a golf course by mates a few times. The day I smashed a greenhouse and hit an old man in the chest was when I realised it really wasn’t working. Plus the mate who was good at golf was always pissed off every time he hit a shot. He should’ve been happier - I put 3 in the pond on the first tee.

A lot of driving ranges have clubs that you can borrow for free or for a deposit. I would definitely try a driving range first and if possible a pitch and putt course if they have one near you before trying a full size golf course.

Look at Facebook marketplace in your area, with people decluttering over the covid period there might be a few bargain clubs on there.

If it helps I've got 2 sort of half sets in the garden I've posted on Facebook a few times people can take for free and they're still there. If you're happy with minimalist packaging and will pay p&p I'll send them to you. Think one sets metal and the other fibreglass of some sort, 100% beginner sticks. They're all irons too.

I started off getting a 7 iron for like £12 from Sports Direct and going to the driving range.. then if you dont like it you only have spent £12!

As Whitecomet said, you only need a few clubs to get you started. A cheap driver, pitching wedge, mid iron and a putter will get you through most small golf courses.

Golf is good fun, it can be quite tiring. Driving range is good for just whacking the ball as hard as you can. A golf course is completely different and can be a bit annoying if your tee shot is not good (like mine) but it's good fun with friends especially having a few beers going around the course on a sunny day.Coops2021-04-23 19:33:26

I used to play golf a lot around 15 years ago, it really is an amazing sport. Incredibly frustrating at times but that feeling when you make great contact with the ball is amazing, not to mention spending a few hours walking around a beautiful course in peace and quite.

I got a starter full set of Donnay clubs from sports direct for around £150, which were really good! Then I bought a set of Ben Hogan irons for around £400. The Hogan irons were, and are awesome but there actually wasn't a massive difference especially not for a beginner.

I wasn't a natural and it took me a while to start getting good. Driving ranges are great for practice but beware, you can hit 20 great drives in a row at the range, then get to the course and not hit a good one all day.

If you go for a better quality 2nd hand set make sure they have decent grips as it makes all the difference.

I will definitely get back into golf one day when I feel I have the time. Good luck.

Most bods I know went through a golf phase and gave up pretty quick, including me.

It's not too hard to get a basic set of clubs for free... facebook and the like, just put a 'wanted'.

Don't waste your money till you know it's for you.

At my local course the scummy kids used to nick your ball on the way out and sell it back to you on the way in. Anyone guess the course? Clue... Essex.

Very generous offer but I think I will take the advice here and borrow some kit to see if I get on with it.

Many thanks to every one who has responded.

Pitch and putt here I come.
