cabinet speakers

Please don't flame me or use lots of those f-words that seem so
popular with certain individuals, but I have a question about
speakers for a mame cabinet I am building.

Yes, I've looked on forums and done some research, but can't find
exactly what I want yet, so I am hoping someone on the group may
have had experience of the same thing.

My cab is a cocktail one, so I don't have room to conceal "normal"
encased computer speakers behind grills. I really need to mount
some speakers inside, which would screw directly to the cabinet
sides. I would cut openings in the sides and place grills over
these.

Has anyone done this? Is there anything off the shelf to run from
the pc power supply, (or its own 240v supply), that would do this?
Is there a set of pc speakers anyone has had success with that I can
strip out of their casings and mount to the cab? etc. etc…..

Any help and notes of other people's experiences and solutions will
be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Roger.

That's how I would do it. Get any old pc speakers and take them apart.
Most amplified speakers take around a 12v supply which you can tap off the
PC +12v (yellow wire) and some speakers are mains powered and have a built
in transformer which takes up hardly any space.
For my MAME cabinet I didn't bother amplifying the signal, I just drove the
speakers direct from the sound output and it seemed loud enough. It doesn't
blow me off my feet but it's good enough. Worth a try to see how it sounds
and it's a good stop gap that allows you to get on and play some games.

The easiest option for you I think would be to buy a pair of cheap pc
speakers and crack open the case, you will find that the speaker with
the volume control has a small pcb for the amplifcation and that, but
other then that they are just normal speakers encased in plastic. You
will probably have to cut/smash the pastic away to get the speaker
out. Try and get some wide speakers that look like they will house
normal round speakers rather then thin ones which will contain oval
speakers. Probably pick a set of decent old pc speakers on ebay for £2-3

What Luke recommended is exactly the way I've done it in the past. There are some that run off 240v and others that have a transformer, it's up to you to use whichever you have space for/can find cheapest. You can pick tehm up brand new for a tenner from Currys, PCWorld, etc. Only thing I would suggest is to check what the output level is like from your sound card. If it's quite low then get higher wattage ones otherwise you might find it a bit too quiet even at full volume.

most auction startups start like this, then over time rollout pricing
structures very simialr to ebay... this isn't the first and wont be
the last site to do this :)
