WHAT I PROPOSE
I had mentioned before about the possibility of doing CAP kits for various monitors, power supplies and Audio boards, etc...

Some of the kits I've bought in the past are literally just that, a pack of capacitors, no instructions or details on various board versions, or differences between maybe the U.S. and European boards. Also you find cheap non-branded caps in there, and yet, seem to pay a premium for.

I had reached out to Mike and Peter at Arcade Parts and Repair to see if they would allow me to take their kits and resell over here as they don't like shipping to Europe due to the taxation laws for each country, which is a real pain in the ass, but so far haven't heard anything back from them. Myself living in Northern Ireland puts me in a unique position as we are still part of the European market and the U.K. I'm registered with both an EORI and XI EORI HMRC numbers for import and export of goods and currently looking at those annoying taxation laws.

So I'm putting it out there, that I'd like to start the New Year off by looking at what people this side of the pond would like, which are the more popular chassis here in the U.K. and Europe as it may be different here compared to the likes of the U.S. or Australian markets.

I'd also like to get my hands on any number of chassis in order to take them apart and create proper instructions complete with actual photographs and, where possible, show the differences between versions.

The caps I'd have in separate baggies for each of the various parks of the boards where applicable, again to help simplify the installation process. Will be using Nichicon caps where possible or other known high quality manufacturers where Nichicon are not available. Over time and as technology and materials have advanced, the sizing and shapes of capacitors have changed. No longer will the caps fit properly into the boards as they are way too small, having to bend the legs to try and get them to fit. At some point, I'd like to rebrand these with Nichicon inside, and reset the sizes, again, in order to ease the installation and look of the board.

So WHAT DO I NEED?
  • I'm looking help from the community in getting as many of the monitor chassis and types as possible. Wanting to break these down, get photographs, eventually getting voltage levels at various locations on the board when in full red, blue and green input signals.
  • Those that do recapping already or monitor repairs to give pointers, help and advice when they are repairing boards, and what to look out for on a particular make and/or model. This will form part of the instructions, either in general or for a specific board.
  • Anyone, again, who regularly repairs boards, do you have a list of caps for boards already, and would you be interested in sharing.
  • A list of the more to least popular monitors across Europe. I know this is a bit of a long shot as many machines and boards have circled the globe, but might as well try and cover the more popular or those that need them the most first.
  • Anything else you might find useful 🤔
If I can get this of the ground I'll add them to my eBay shop and eventually my website shopfront as well, payments section just doesn't want to play ball at the minute.

I'd also like, at some point, to start providing repair kits as well with parts that mainly get destroyed, cap kit, resistors, I.C.s etc...

As well as here, I'll be posting this on various Facebook forums as well and try to get a much feedback as possible and keep everyone informed over time.

Thanks again to the great community and support we have here in the U.K., Ireland and of course the rest of Europe.

I put this out on multiple arcade and CRT Facebook Forums and managed to get some feedback from there.
So far most of the Hantarex range the K7000 and K4900 with a few of the Electrohomes especially the G07s.
I've been checking what I've currently got in stock and the vast amount are indeed Hantarex. Still have to check what I've got in the cabs themselves, but that a whole job in itself.

Let me know what makes and models you all have.

In France a lot of Hantarex 900, 900/E, 9000, 9100. Monitronic Master was also found on several french cabinets because of French company, these boards are known to be unreliable, Intervideo VNS series were used too. Those boards were generally in generic cabinets. Dedicated ones had of course Well Gardners and other known brands.

Been looking at how best to represent the boards for the instructions. I'm currently just working of photos off the chassis I currently have to hand. The idea is to clearly mark the position on a simplified version of the board to aid identification and its orientation.

This seems to be the simplest idea that I've come across. This is just an example of 2 of the boards from a Hantarex MTC900.

Do you have any recommendations on how the instructions should be written, or how the CAP kit could be organised, to help both the well worn, and the wet behind the ears, crowd.

Was thinking of putting the voltages and values on the drawings as well, but where you get a lot of caps in one place, it just looks a mess.

I've ordered CAP kits in the past, and sometimes it's just a bag of caps and no instructions at all. I'd like this to be the best CAP kit service out there, if that's possible, but would like feedback, especially those who regularly use them.

As an example, this MTC900 would contain a bag of caps, and inside separate bags for each board, even if that just meant one cap. Each bag clearly labelled with the name of the board it's for. Instructions showing each board, as shown here, the cap numbers and the voltage and value for that particular cap.

Feedback very welcome, and as mentioned previously, if you have any old chassis you're not using, or looking to toss out the window, I'd be happy to take them off your hands.

I don't know if this idea is workable, but here goes. I'd like "cap kits as a service" - send in a list of requirements and receive back either the caps, or a list of parts I can quickly plug into a suppliers order form.

The trawling catalogues looking for suitable replacements is the part that sucks up the most time. While its nice to have a kit available so you can desolder and immediately solder replacements in, I wouldnt mind documenting what I need one day and getting the kit back a few days later - I just dont want to spend a whole day hunting replacements.

I'd pay for this.

Hunting down the required caps can be a real pain, and as time moves on, the cap sizes are all different, leg spacings, etc..., so some of the caps no longer fit in the holes without twisting and splaying the legs. Finding radial caps but it's axial ones you're looking for, the list goes on.

Having a central service should help to reduce cost, by having the ability to bulk buy and hopefully pass that onto the customer. When you pay £3.50 for a single cap, but 100 off is £0.79.

I would very much love a service myself that you display the PCBs, you tap on a component, and it would list that component, not just caps. Once finished, hit the order button and those components are automatically ordered. 🤔

Yeah, im thinking someone with time to spare could work out a database and standardise the lookup format to show equivalents where direct replacements may not be available.

I suspect once it was worked out itd be ripped off by bigger suppliers though...
