Choosing the Right Heavy Duty Shelving for My Workshop

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to install heavy duty shelving in my workshop to store large tools, paint cans, and boxes. I want something durable, stable, and easy to assemble. I’m unsure about the differences between steel, industrial-grade metal, and reinforced wood options, and what weight capacity I should aim for.

Adjustable shelves would be ideal, but I’m also concerned about space efficiency.

Has anyone had experience with certain brands or setups that held up well over time?

Any tips on installation, safety, or maximizing storage would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Short answer is I have multiple different shelving systems in my workshop as has some tight spaces which I couldn’t find an off the shelf solution for so made from timber.
I have a long row of this shelving from rapid racking which is excellent (upto 400kg per shelf !) great for storing monitors or plastic boxes (really useful storage are my pick )
Here is the link Rapid racking easy to assemble , change levels if you need too and ultra strong.
Storage and organizing is king in a workshop and well worth the investment.

Depends on how much weight and volume you need to stash ? I recommend std slotted dexion steel ….. bit costly but long long life and cut it and assemble ( using the recommended bolts and corner stabiliser plates). It can be tailored to any size you cut yourself and easy secured to a wall too if desired ….. 4 pictures follow two are dexion one is a similar (red cheaper Argos style ready sized). The wooden one is a IKEA wardrobe unit without its cloth cover bit weak and saggy but I have possibly given it maximum abuse

Dexion too will hold plastic ‘lin bins’ if desired if it’s assembled angle upwards ! This way also cut floor boards or old machine doors to solidify shelf bases for small bits spray cans tools etc

I keep many tools and bits in office metal filing cabinets out of sight and damage risk and ideal for manuals and similar paperwork … but I stack old coin boxes and those folding plastic crates in places too….. the Argos one comes with metal shelves suitable for 14/ 20” monitors you decide the spacing levels.

In my life any flat surface is sacred I have thousands of parts and misc work aid stuff.

I have lin bins and storage drawer units for screws , clips , fuses and microswitches etc.

The brown dexion has done over 30 years in various locations and I have a few small blue lin bins on one side … one shelf has about 15 polo chassis on and never any threat of overloading

The green one same dexion stuff painted with hammerite spray , has Haribo sweet cartons with lids for numerous small items , locks , heavy and light parts too big for Lin bins etc….made exactly to measure to accommodate those containers and is in a seperate garden shed secured to the shed wall with one decent screw to prevent it swaying forward …..

The wooden shelf was “temporary” about 15 years ago but once they fill up where else can stuff go …. The floor is already full to capacity.

Looks great @69er !
I have a very multi functional workshop - creative space for the various design / art / fabrication things I am involved in . Then the arcade stuff which I try to bring in batches so not to get overwhelmed - currently tho I have broken my rules and too much to work on ie overwhelmed 😂
Halfords offer have ‘wham’ boxes on sale and they are excellent for components even boards.
I agree with @69er keeping surfaces clear is something I strive for as slows down the work if not.

Occasionally I am able to close the door …. When the floor is clear enough… If I say to visitors “ how many pinballs did you see ? “ they reply 2 perhaps 3 ??? There’s 6 I think but can’t see them as they too become shelves …..🤣 even the door is fully ‘loaded’ as too … much of the roof space (hooks or nails in beams) … problem is finding an item you know is in there but exactly where and accessible that’s another thing. … !

Picture of workshop door .. there is a small enclosed area outside the workshop also get a bit congested …
