Here's a weird discussion for ya. Its link to video games is tenuous but its linked all the same.
Me and a mate were discussing the audio book Console Wars: Sega vs Nintendo. Personally I think it was an entertaining and enlightening listen into the history of two behemoths of gaming. I do recommend it.
Here's the argument we were having. The reader is a Fred Berman an American born voice actor who has pedigree in voicing many audio books. There are, obviously, many references and recollections of conversations had between the execs within Sega of Japan and Nintendo of Japan in the book, for which Berman puts on various Japanese accents/voices.
Now I'm no expert, but he does a pretty good job and as this is a factual/entertainment book professionally produced, I had no issue with the accents used to convey the various conversations. However my mate thinks its racist and they should have got a voice over actor of the correct race to portray the characters in the book.
I think he's being a bit over the top, maybe even trying to get a rise out of me. If someone is mimicking an accent in a stereotypical way to mock a group people, then that's racist.
Anyway, I just thought it was interesting my mate took such a strong stance against this guy's efforts to portray individuals in a book.
