JUST A SUMMARY OF A RECENT FIX IN A NORTH WALES ARCADE last week and a brief how they work if you were at all curious how the pay out coins get higher than the coins going off the rear of the belt??? I WAS WHEN I FIRST SAW STREETS WHEEL EM IN in 1960s a a kid.. the system has hardly changed in half a century. but upgraded to electronic from electro- mechanical, like most arcade stuff

got quite black with dust first day (in a white work shirt) but all working after return visit (in a black shirt - i deliberately have both)) and this takes a lot of coins in its daily work so does suffer the odd breakdown A FEW TIPS IF YOU HAVE ONE or want one in future maybe

wrote this as brief post in WANTED but as you can see got carried away at the keyboard so re-posting in fixes it may help other members to get one working ???

transferred post:

there are still some of the Cromptons pink ROLL A WIN ones about i had 2 and just LAST WEEK REPAIRED ONE I HAVE MAINTAINED for over 2 decades in Abergele ( can be seen on a google images 'roll a coin' in 2011 ) they are very heavy but only two bays wide

one of mine was in the drive for over a year no-one wanted it ...... so stripped and smashed it and the spare parts went via ebay but i still had some bits from the previous one i retired from use.....

Lucky that,, as i am the freelance engineer of the one in Pensarn Pleasure Beach arcade AND IT BROKE DOWN BADLY AS THEY DO .....last month .....the main belt motor packed up these cost about £275 normally ........ some other parts can still be bought new for them as its also had several other repairs over the last 25 years

i had a motor that was ok but a bit squeaky theirs was seized and the splined pulley was very rough and it had chewed the belt which was also hard and brittle the dust of its decay had clogged the motor via the vent holes

IT STILL LIVES NOW.. i searched their store room which has the odd parts off other games and they had a diamonds 8 sided pusher motor with its octopus drive rods still attached and stuck to the shaft so took that home to adapt as it was sweet as new otherwise when i tested it on the bench AND I ORDERED A NEW BELT 5/8 wide 95 teeth at 5tpi rescued my almost like new pulley off the squeaky running motor , stripped the octopus arrangement off the nice diamonds forever motor and rigged it with my mounting plate and pulley ,,,, the plate is slotted at mount to frame and plate to motor so a belt of 95 teeth i could get (19") comfortably replaced the (20") 100 teeth one which is now obsolete at that 5/8" width (i find, but some belt dealers may have it or make it if desired)

this bay had had little attention but i recall fitting a front/back coin belt new about 3 years ago , and about a year before that it needed a top elevator spindle and bearings where the coins lift to the payout hopper.... the other bay had a complete exchange of bed mat frame and motor when the belt ripped across half way jamming and burned the motor out but i still had a full unit to slip in and repair next day ....... lucky again but the coin bottom belt and the bearings where still available when i tracked them down.

in another arcade (Dunes) a single player version i used to work on needed a rear roller and bearing as lack of grease the bearings seized one side and got 'smokey hot' one day, and the centre ball run of the bearing wore through the rear shaft in a few of days i noticed it was loose and ordered a rear roller and bearings but the guy wanted keep it on (silly man) and by time i went back the next week it fell apart completely he scrapped it a while later? as his bed belt had stretched a bit in the collapse after spending £135 on a rear roller and paying me.. I think rollers from games like grand national and other newer 'roll in' belt games fit each other if same width as do the main motors interchange between pushers and games like 4 sided Luxor flick in the square coin lander games?

to see how they work there's a you tube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DdUncCCQsQ and it saves me some explaining tho its play sound only..

[tube]4DdUncCCQsQ[/tube]

however... it goes live when a coin goes through the entry slot and the lower belt goes reverse to the elevator hopper for 30 - 40 coins then when the hopper goes up to the top to fill the hopper the lower belt goes forward and fills the cash box takings accessed from the front door. the belt runs all the time its powered so very long hours and the coin if on target passes over two opto sensors set wide for the 10p / £1 payout with a just coin width white landing area ..so has strict width (narrow) tolerance and a bit closer for 10p or 20 p payouts and the belt black lines are wider too.. just to give you a bit of a chance , The coin has to break both opto beams to pay out .. the elevator hopper goes to the top at power ON in case its part filled when turned off the previous day else it might overflow ? this makes it hard to remove the outer cover box if it happens and fills with coins , there's hardly a fault i have never met with these arcade games so if you find one i am here to answer most questions on them .

got bit carried away with topic here so will put on fixes also to be of help to members acquiring or owning one? AS SAID also on wanted with a late extra edit after i pressed 'control C' to re-post here.

Good run down there of what can happen to these cabs Norman, nice seeing repair logs of other types of arcade machines! I always played on one of these (I think it was a Wheel 'Em In) with my dad or mum over 20 years ago whenever we went to the Harbour Amusements arcade in St. Ives here in Cornwall. Always wanted to pick up one of the Wheel 'Em In's or Roll a Win (wasn't there also one called Roll 'Em?) but they're pretty big! I think you could get single player ones though which would be a better bet! If I remember correctly the Wheel 'Em In was up the back of the arcade on the left hand side, near one 2 or 3 of those skee-ball machines with a long alley you chuck a ball up. Yeah I remember now as it was right opposite an Operation Wolf and some other cabs of a similar era. Some other big cabs they had are Namco CosmoSwat and a Shoot Away in the opposite side of the arcade at the back, I always liked playing those as well but again they take up a lot of room and probably getting very rare these days anyway!

my business associate and i operate in many of the pubs and leisure outlets in Rhyl and surrounding towns ,and a different arcade in Towyn, however this Roll a Win is in Pensarn Pleasure Beach (Williams' amusements) arcade the far one behind Abergele / Pensarn station on the beach promenade . and i get service calls there for the major breakdowns. but they are often in a queue so some things take a while to put right..

it used to be real nice back in the 60s 70s but its gone commercial and a bit rough in parts, STILL OK for day trippers and shopping but PAID PARKING on prom roadway and congested side street parking in summer puts many people off.. the funfair is gone but our friend Noah who owned it has us do odd jobs on the adventure land opposite the arcades and he also owns Ffrith Beach 10 pin bowling alley where we have a number of machines in Prestatyn.. and a plus the Towyn Williams funfair/ Tir Prince Car Boot/market is massive but again pay to park unless you walk from the housing estate near the crossroads opposite Black Cat arcade and Knightly's funfair/arcade in Towyn worth a visit with some nice beer/food pubs on main road and holiday parks (public access) which we also supply with amusements (subtle advert) some accommodation is quite cheap i have stayed at travel lodge and premier in Rhyl and OYO Pier Hotel is nice and low priced. but there has been NO PIER there since about 1970 but sealife centre and some other stuff for kids all in the town, while the arcade frontage has this year seen major demolition of the huge Vern's Savoy amusements and Queens arcade as the whole block is to be re-developed.. other surviving arcade operators have taken over the smaller units to enlarge themselve to meet future casino floorspace requirements so there stil 3 or 4 big amusements on Rhyl town prom... google street view what you expect to see on the main fronts and Towyn A548 and sandbank rd to the fair . (if they are fully updated).... most people like the area too as its close to Snowdon and other coastal & inland towns offering some alternative activities?

We love Ryle , Towyn but with Covid and me being ill we have not been for a few years. We went every year as kids and I genuinely cried when the fairs closed !!!! So sad to see the amount of shops on the front shrink to next to nothing. Still a nice town though with plenty of places to eat and wander.

My wife loves Bingo so we have to go there as well !! lol. I enjoy it to but I dont like to tell her that.

I dont drink now adays and my kids are 22 & 24 so (Sadly) they no longer come away with us.

I would give ANYTHING to go back to the 80's as it took all day to visit the arcades , Now it takes 10 minutes and its all fruits & redemption s**t.

Its the same everywhere though , Cheap travel abroad killed the big holiday places (Lots of other things also). Why go in a caravan where it rains for £700 a week when you can take you entire family abroad and pay next to nothing for food , booze and fags ?? A trip abroad cost a lot less than that. I remember in the early 90's when we went to Turkey and it was 35p for a full english breakfast and 10p For 20 Smokes !!!! lol

There is some hope for Rhyl the redevelopment there are and have been doing seems to be going well. As far as the shops are concerned there is less and less now people just have things delivered.

I must route out the pics of when I was young there , We must have 100's.

Dave.

P.S I was lucky we went to Rhyl for 2 weeks with my Mum and stepdad and then 2 weeks in Blackpool with my Dad and Stepmom ! So glad they divorced !

Used to love the holidays in Caravans, would have to ask my dad where we went, pretty sure we went wales one year. Arcades were always great, playing on the Mechanical Gun Games, Wheel em in a favourite, used to like the cranes, when they were proper cranes so I had to buy one of those, don't remember if they were the really old ones in Wood Cabinets and they wouldn't really fit in with the other machines but when a Dock Master came up and fairly local, I had to have it and always remembered the Glendale Chicken and Parrot Egg machines so had to buy those also

Don't remember playing any Video games back then though, was late 70's early 80's
