I had no idea they'd changed the physical interface between DDR2 & DDR3.

I'm now sat here part way through two system builds because I bought the DDR3 sticks from somewhere on free 5 day delivery as it saved me nearly £18 (including the free delivery). And it's not due until early next week.

I was thinking that I'd build the systems with my existing DDR2 and just swap the DDR3 in at my leisure when it turns up. Bah, if I'd know I'd have stomached the delivery cost

yes, very annoying isn't it. I got my new bits of PC only to discover that the new motherboard didn't have an old style IDE connector, which I need for my DVD drive - so had to wait until I got a PATA->SATA converter to be able to install the OS.

I was aware they still did it for CPU sockets but I honestly thought it all just boild down to bus speed and Mhz when it came to memory these days. Oh well, will teach me to be a bit trigger happy when ordering. At least I've not ordered the wrong thing, I've just got a delay.

I am however hoping that the CPU heatsink paste that I applied won't have any kind of issue with the fact it won't get any heat applied to it to cure it for another 3 or 4 days. Never done anything other than applied it, then switched it on within about an hour or so before.

Yes, built in obsolescence , I also fell for that on a build I did a while back.

That'll teach me to not read up on current technology.

I've never heard about this before - is it a theoretical concern you've got based on the purpose of the substance or something you've seen mentioned elsewhere? I would have thought that given the compound is basically a suspension of silver particles and a carrier gloop with a very low specific heat that it'll work just fine. The ones I get worried about are when you almost have to chip off the old thermal paste as it's turned to concrete :)

I can't think it'll affect me but you've piqued my interest now so I need to know more :)

cheers

ps I'd also be keen to hear how you get on with your i7 CPU. I was just looking today to see if I can get this quad-core desktop (intel Q6600) past 8GB of RAM to maybe 16GB and then got tempted by the newer i7 CPUs coming out. I see one is listed as "Cores: 4+4" so I'm not sure if it's really 8 core, or 4 core + hyperthreading.

I would guess it's the same as yours is now (4+4). Even the Q6600's are 4physical + 4virtual. I had in the back of my mind that my current CPU is an E6600 - don't know if there's a difference or not?

Any major increase I see here (if at all) I'm expecting to come from bus and technology increases as I'm already on a quad core 2.4Ghz that's o/c'd to 3Ghz.

I just had the opportunity to upgrade relatively cheaply so I'm now going to one of the previous i7's (Bloomfield 950 @ 3.06Ghz). Gives me USB3, faster triple channel memory and the same (or better) performance for less heat / noise. I didn't go for one of the current Sandy Bridge crop, mostly down to OS X not working on them yet and also the whole Intel bug thing which would have meant buying something that I knew would have had to have been returned and swapped out sometime around April / May. And motherboards are a pain in the arse to swap out!

Ignore me (mostly) on the paste. I think I'm being overly thick and / or cautious. Heat paste generally tends to 'cure' over the course of the first few days of use and your temps decrease anything up to 5C as a result. But obviously that's assuming it's subjected to normal operating temperature. Not sure how mine is going to take being all pasted up and assembled and then not powered on for what will be 4 days by the time I've got the memory in my hands to be able to switch the PC on.

Nothing I guess is the answer, I'm sure it'll be fine. If not and I'm getting unexepectedly high temps then I'll just remove the cooler (gigantic as it is) clean the CPU up and apply new paste.

The RAM slot also changed when it went from DDR to DDR2. Planned obsolescence I'm afraid - the joys of buying latest technology...........

Lucky boy getting a Core i7 too, I'd like to pick one of those up when the prices comes down a bit.

I've got a reasonable setup (Q9650, 4gb 1066mhz ram, GTX280), but I built an i7 rig for my MD a few weeks ago, with a GTX480 and 6gb of 1600mhz RAM and it blew my system out of the water on every benchmark I cared to try!

Yes, I'm very pleased the opportunity to do this came up. Although you'd think the difference between a Core2Quad at 3Ghz and an i7 @ 3.4Ghz would be minimal the difference in MMORPG's is like night and day showing that the system under a C2Q was CPU bound. I'm getting 20 - 25fps more in heavily populated areas of both WoW and Rift, plus no stutter / buffering issues on the GPU and that's with all settings cranked up to max @ 1920x1080.

On top of that, I picked up a couple of bargain bucket games, and got a freebie with the new graphics card so Crysis, Crysis Warfront, Batman AA and AvP 2010 all new to play, and further more, they all play at maximum settings too

Very happy bunny right now.

If only I didn't have to reinstall OS X
