[ukvac] Home brew MAME cab.
The current edition of the American magazine Nuts and Volts, (available
from Borders bookstore) currently has an article written by someone who
built their own game cabinet using measurements taken from a Defender
cab.

They didn't bother routing out slots to join the bits, but instead used
what looks like strips of 2x2 to act as large corner blocks. The end
result looks pretty good and they have even adapted the design to allow
the front of the control panel to hinge down giving access to the hacked
keyboard that not only acts as the switch interface, but is also still
usable as an actual keyboard for system adjustments and loading of new
romsets. The keyboard is physically attached to the hinge down panel so
that it doesn't need slid out or anything.

They have a conventional PC monitor sitting on an internal shelf behind
the screen mask, and to be honest they could have done with using a
bigger monitor. Better still if the cabinet was scaled to the size of a
15 or 17" monitor, then maybe the chassis could be stripped to allow the
bezel to be screwed onto a rotatable frame.

They've also added buttons at the side for playing video pinball, and
since they are also using the system to play other emulators, they have
included a small touchpad mouse on the control panel.

The whole thing looks quite good and very robust, so maybe it wouldn't
be too hard to knock up custom cabinets without having to master
excessive joinery skills.
