Hi everybody ;)

We've had a problem for a while now about email notifications to threads - basically mail not getting through or appearing very late. This has been investigated and it looks as though there are two causes.

1. A change in the code of WebWiz. This "feature" which isn't actually mentioned anywhere is that you will only receive one email update to a thread you're subscribed to until you come back to the board and read that thread. So if there are 20 posts, you'll get a mail about the first post and the following 20 posts won't get mailed out as WebWiz assumes you're not interested until you come back and view the thread. Nice.

2. Possible mail routing problems. With the increase in spam and other unsolicited email, most ISPs are a lot more picky about mail they'll accept and deliver onwards.

Now, if you take these two points together it makes it bloody hard to figure out what the problem is when an email isn't received. Is it because WebWiz judges that you're not interested in the thread so doesn't send out any more notifications, or is it because that the mail is being sent and is ending up in a virtual spam bucket somewhere?

Because we love you guys so much

a lot of work has been put into investigating these problems so we can fix them. Plus we have some major new voodoo coming which we know is going to be pretty interesting to many of you, but we don't want to go there yet if we can't have our lovely members aware of messages on topics they're interested in.

So over the next few days we will be making some changes to the way email alerts are handled. Hopefully this will be entirely transparent - the only noticable impact will be that you get more email notifications for any threads you're subscribed to. We don't think this will be a problem as you've marked those threads as interesting, so it stands to reason you want to be kept up to date.

What I would ask is that when we post updates to this thread letting you know what should now be happening, if you find it's not working as expected for you I'd appreciate you letting us know. You can do this via PM or by posting to this thread.

The first change has just gone live and is a change to how we route mail so that we can analyse the traffic flow easier and be completely certain when WebWiz is or isn't sending out mail. If you notice an increase in the number of mails you receive please post in the thread below so we can see what effect this had.

Later on this week there will be a code change to WebWiz so that it goes back to the old behaviour of sending a mailout for every post in a thread/forum you're subscribed to. We'll post back with details of when this is live.

thanks,

tim

I'm seeing mail copies of replies to threads I'm subscribed to that I've not revisited, so I'm not sure if the original statement of "Webwiz will only send a second email update after a user has visited the thread after the first email mailout" is actually true. I'm seeing a lot more email traffic now and I've only been looking at a couple of Mod threads tonight, yet I'm seeing updates from subscribed threads e.g. the Tatio PSU thread.

Could be you're right and the routing was the fault and I don't need to modify the code - happy days

Well, I won't say "told you so" quite yet

But it will be nice if that's "job done" and no more effort required on your part.

How is this going for everybody? Mail flow through the SMTP router looks about as it did immediately after the change so from my side things look good :)

Seems good to me - I'm not aware that I've missed a single post since the config switch. It's just been really quiet
