My local maplins, closed today. Also went to one, a bit further out and the same. The shelves were stripped bare. People that never even shopped in maplins, just bought stuff because 80% off, and will flog it online!

I know people have mixed feelings about maplins, but it was handy for the odd component (When they had it).

Another shop bites the dust.....

went into our local one mid-week - quite depressing, as usual they didn't have what I needed. Won't miss it, I'll just use Mouser, Farnell & RS more (or take a chance on cheap Chinese stuff off Amazon/eBay).

They though they had enough stock left to stay open until mid-June then they were shutting up show too.

Yes, I popped in when it was 60% off, and as well as the bit I went in for, I needed a hard disk - at 60% off it was still £50 more than amazon - not surprised they didn't sell much!

I bought quite a bit from maplin when I started out, my project box that I put my first supergun into that I still use today was from them. I liked their selection wire too but as others have said they were so over priced that I ended up using rs, cpc, rapid etc in the end.

I popped in a few weeks back and they still wanted 15 quid for an iPhone charger even after a "closing down sale" discount was applied. Which said it all really.

I don't understand why they didn't transfer the whole business online years ago - they were perfectly positioned to clean up in the UK market for what they do. Their website was a shambles.
