Lat year I was given an Electrocoin Neo Geo 6 Slot cab by my workplace who were having a clear out. Until just recently the cab has been at the back of my garage behind loads of junk, a garden shed etc.
but now after a good clear out and finally putting the shed up I have plenty of space in the garage again and the cab is indoors.
I was a bit wary when I saw the size of the cab, as it's very tall and has a big vertically mounted monitor so I was pleasantly surprised to find it's no bigger than any of the other cabs I have, only taller.
It's actually shallower than the other cabs and even though its got a wide monitor it's pretty much the same as the others.
Although dedicated classics are my real faves, Neo Geo games are still up there and a few titles in particular I really love so I'm very pleased to have this.
I recently got hold of a replacement power supply (Hantarex US250) as the old one was completely dead, and checked the voltages.
Everything was fine apart from the +12V line, the -12V works normally but I am only getting point something of a volt.
I replaced the fuse, checked the solder connections etc. and as I was getting a stable 5V I decided to hook up the connectors.
I knew the logic board didn't need 12V so I thought it was safe to try it out.
I stuck one cartridge in, switched the three! interlocks and powered up.
The fan on the monitor started to life and I heard the crackle of static from the monitor so checked round the front...
To my joy I saw the familiar boot up screen then the metal slug attract screen!
There was no sound and none of the lights or the credit display work, but the monitor image is fantastic - nice and sharp, great geometry and spot on colours.
Initially, hardly any of the buttons worked but after a quick cleaning of the contacts everything works nicely. Looks like I got lucky with that
I decided to try the different slots and after various combinations, wiping the connections on the cartridges & jiggling them in the slots all 6 games worked!
Obviously I am pretty happy about that, plus most of the games are awesome
I assume the sound issue is because of the 12V and after checking up this seems to be the case.
Although I don't know for sure if the audio on the board is working properly I will see what happens when I get that working.
I'm familiar with the problems with the EL panels but the marquee above and the coin reject button also aren't lit so probably the same issue.
The credit display does work however.
At the moment I'm studying the schematics and looking for components that need replacing,
there isn't a whole lot to the +12V circuit and as -12 works fine that should help me to narrow down where the fault is.
I have to say apart from looking a bit odd this cab is awesome - very nice quality, great screen and controls and this one is in pretty decent shape.
I've played on a Lordsvale before but this is quite a different experience
I'll post some pics soon.
