Tremendous work, chaps.
Yours would still
be the best-value retro-arcade-podcast out there, even if the 10 pence
of the title was the entrance fee, and not just the nostaligia button...
And what an interesting choice of game for this month's challenge.
I've
always been a big fan of the Raiden games. I remember really falling
for the first one when it came out. Even back then - in 1990 or whatever
- it had a bit of a retro vibe, running like a pumped up Twin Cobra. So I was keen to give its mutant offshoot a whirl.
On
first play, Viper Phase 1 (New Version) seemed like a chip off the old
block. I
loved it.
On second play, I was hooked.
By the third play, I was
thinking, this is great, but where's my extra man?
On fourth play, I
concluded it was too flipping difficult... But I persevered.
After
3 weeks' hard slog, I still think it's brutal. I haven't yet made it past
the level 3 boss. But I have figured out a few sure-fire tricks for
score-maxxing.
First one: on level one, as tempting as it may be - don't
shoot the third medal-crate as it moves up the tracks. Let it go all the way
under the bridge. As soon as it comes back out again, shoot it,
revealing the medal. But - and here's the
really tricky bit - don't collect it
until it stops flashing, which is just before it disappears off the bottom of
the screen. Took me about 40 tries to get that right. But it's worth
the 100,000 bonus points!
Second one: Don't shoot the
flying Easter Eggs until they've come down from the top of the screen and are on their
way back up again. If you do that, you get double the number of medals, which
translates into a massive end of level bonus.
Third one: Shoot EVERYTHING right int'face!
Here's my best effort so far. Reckon I cold squeeze out a few more 100K, even without getting to level 4.
