[ukvac] OT: Connecting to IRC through a firewall
Hi guys,

As the subject says, i need to setup mIRC to connect through a firewall
(WinProxy to be precise).

Has anyone done it (i'm sure someone has) and can anyone help me out please.
I believe i have enabled the relevent ports (113 & 6660-6669) for both
directions, but all i get is "Enable Identd" and "Banned: Clones".

Any help mucho appreciated.

Off-list i suggest!

Cheers,
Guddler

Re: [ukvac] OT: Connecting to IRC through a firewall
I think firewalls actually look at the type of message that is being sent
through the ports aswell. For example, email use SMTP and POP3, IRC have
similar types. These message types can be blocked.

If you just want to get to an IRC, can you get to an online client? Similar
to what Hotmail does, in that it sends SMTP messages, but you're connecting
via HTTP, so the firewall doesn't care.

The http client for UKVAC doesn't work either. Bottom line is, that java
applet is still trying to go out on the normal ports, so unless i missed
something, it will (and does) fail too...

mIRC can be set to use an HTTP proxy and maintain a persistent connection,
but the proxy/firewall in WinProxy doesn't allow it and i can't see any
options for letting it through on the HTTP proxy.

It may be that the irc server can't do a lookup on your ip or an ident, try
the following server :-

irc.ins.net.uk
