[ukvac] OT: Has anyone tried one of these programmers?

Hi everyone

I've recently been looking for an EPROM programmer with built-in IC
testing as I've stumbled across this on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72404&item=3847227561

Seems to be a bit of a bargain at that price and they're local to me
so I could collect in person and save £9 :)

Has anyone out there used one of these programmers, and would care to
comment on how great (or not) they are?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Not yet!

I'd appreciate your feedback if you go for it...

I have seriously considered the Top2005 model several times (same
seller, more or less same item, but Win XP compatibility is
guaranteed due to the newer software IIRC). Just haven't brought
myself to shell out the dosh yet.

Traded the galep4 for a DataIO to get all the old chip compatibility
and proms etc, figured one of those being relatively cheap and
having the IC test would be an ideal way to get the top end device
support back.

Martin.

I tried two of these from the same seller and could not get either to work
properly. I tried an XP Pro, XP Home and Win 98 PC with similar results on
all ... (the Win 98 was even a clean install!).

Having said that the seller was very good and gave me a full refund so
don't be soured by my experience!

Hiya Martin

Which Data I/O have you got, if it does PROMs? I know my 288 doesn't
do them which is a shame as it's great for everything else (well,
EPROMs anyway!)

I've just got one of these:
http://www.elnec.com/preprom02alv.php

This works perfectly on my Win XP Pro Laptop and the user interface is fab,
where as the TOP 2003 one was a little lacking ...
Alas it does not do TTL/CMOS logic testing but has much better algorithm
and device support.

They are available from stock from Crownhill for £135+VAT
http://www.crownhill.co.uk/product.php?prod=43

Hope this helps ...

One of these:
http://www.leopardcats.com/dio/diofs/diofs.htm

Quite a few VAC'ers have them i think. Does all the old proms and stuff in
the configuration i have, but only does eproms up to from 2708 to 27512.
Modules are available for Pals / Gals etc (the LogikPak) and a 40pin module
is also available for the larger devices (if anyone has one of those FS then
please let me know).

BTW - The one in the webpage there is sold i beleive, just using it for
reference.

As i say, a toss up between tracking down a 40 pin module and maybe a
logicpak for my DataI/O, or one of the Top2005 proggers that can also do the
logic chip testing. I'm in no urgent rush to decide though since it turns
out all the larger roms i used to do were for other people - haven't had to
do one since getting shot of the Galep4 :O)

[ukvac] Re: OT: Has anyone tried one of these programmers?

The last message was supposed to be off-list. Ooops!

Thanks for all the responses so far on this subject. I'm still
thinking of buying either the TOP2003 or the 2005. It's the component
testing ability that I really need as I have stacks of pulled ICs that
need sorting out, and an old ABI chip tester with four knackered ZIF
sockets which I can't be bothered to sort out. Of course, if anyone
could help me out with the ZIFs or a complete board for the ABI then
I'm interested :)

The guy who's selling the TOP2003 seems okay from his eBay profile and
he's local to me, which could be helpful. I just hope that the
programmer will work happily with my main machine which is good old
Win98 SE.

If I take the plunge and buy one then I'll report back on my
experiences with it.

Dave
