[ukvac] OT: MSDN/Select Licencing query
Sorry for the OT post.

At work, our Windows server & desktop support department have a full set of MSDN
and Technet folders bag things full of CDs. These are fully subscribed to and, of
course, no-one ever uses them. Additionally, no-one actually knows what's in them
or what licences it gives you.

Now, I have to get a development server built with Windows 2003 running IIS6, as
my team have just taken over control of our Intranet, which until now has been
developed on the live box!

I have acquired the server hardware, and now I need to licence it. What I need to
know is whether as part of MSDN you get full licences of the programs that are
supplied in it for use on development servers.

Our Intranet was developed by a (since gone) hacker with an unlicenced FrontPage
2003. I'm thinking that we can develop the Intranet using Visual Studio .NET for
free as part of our MSDN. Is this right?

What about server licences on development boxes? The MSDN has several product
keys, but what I don't really want to be doing is having our desktop deportment
building a server to my spec, only to find that I have to find a hatful of extra
money to buy yet more licences.

Any thoughts appreciated.

It normally depends on the product. For servers and Visual Studio they just provide you with the media, You then have to purchase the licsences (they literally just give you the number). I might be wrong but I belive that you are entitled to a 30 day trial period, if you have numbers with the CDs that is probably why.

Cliff.

Re: [ukvac] OT: MSDN/Select Licencing query
i'm not aware of the 30day trial thing, but i know that if the MSDN is
a universal level subscription you will have everything that you need
for what you want Phil.

What you absolutely can't do is install it all and then decide "great,
that worked now let's use it for live". That then becomes production
which is not allowed. Some of the products expire after about 18
months, although i think thats only the Beta's.

As Cliff says. The discs are just the media and you then need a
subscription (approx £1800 - small fry for a bank!) that will allow
you to install 1 copy (of everything) somewhere. Doesn't all need to
be on the same box.

If it's volume license then it's even easier as you don't get any of
this activation crap!

HIH,

Martin.

Login to

https://msdn.microsoft.com

You should have your login details seeing you're recieving the CD's.

Once in you can download ANY iso in the Microsoft suite From windows 3.0
right upto Windows Vista Beta 1 (I downloaded it the other day - 2.42GB!!)

All the license keys for each product are included with the iso on the
download page. MSDN software does restrict you to the number of times you
can activate the product though - like Windows 2003 Server you get 10-15
licenses etc. This is easily overcome by when phoning up product activation
just say you're rebuilding the machine (and thus it's not a new
computer/server).

Hope this helps,

If you're a very big company you should maybe think about contacting
Microsoft to get your own set of VLK media - doesn't need product activation
either.

/o

RE: [ukvac] OT: MSDN/Select Licencing query
As I recall, MSDN enterprise licences allow you up to 10 sets of
installs for the express purpose of developing on MS platforms and
software.

As for developing intranet stuff - it's a piece of piss with IIS6,
VS.NET 2003 (or if you can get it, go for 2005 with .NET 2.0 - it's the
total dogs bollocks)

Take a look at Sharepoint Team Services (not the portal stuff - you have
to pay for that, and you also need a full SQL server in the backend, so
that's more dosh)... its simple, effective and easily expandable.
