I am wondering if there are any solutions to holding large PCB's when working on them. I am currently using two mini cardboard boxes which works sort of, but I am thinking there must be a better way. So what do the more experienced repairers use?

I'm not so experienced, but I bought one of these at cricklewood ... and it's rather lovely. :)

I've got one of the above holders, which is good for small PCBs (like Vectrex logic/power boards), but no good for anything bigger. For bigger stuff, I just lay it down on a heatproof silicon mat, and prop up as needed with anything suitable that I have lying around. 😆

Yes that's what I am doing, but I thought I might be missing a trick. I am a bit OCD I don't like the capacitors getting pushed off vertical when laid straight on a mat.
