Hi Andy,
yes the bulbs are pricey, but I've have the them for 5 years without any problems or defective bulbs.

If your not happy with the Philips hue app (not that many options) , you can try the "hueDynamic" or "Light Dj" app from the playstore.

Again it's not bargain, but the last and the work flawlessly.

Yes I am, I've got white and colour bulbs in one room and and the white ambiance ones in another. Works great, and integrates nicely with Apple/Siri if you're an Apple user.

It's very pricey but I suppose you get what you pay for. Dont forget if you're running more than 10 bulbs you'll need the hub which is another £50.

Also been using hue stuff for a while without any issues, there's also a free pc app that lets you sync your lights with whatever your PC is playing or react to music etc. quite flexible.
I went for Hue as didn't want to worry about cheap bulbs over heating or worse
