Fixing a few more boards for Vamino.
Thought I would start with a simple one but boy did it give me problems.
First was a blank screen. When I first switched on I got brief garbage but turning it on after that it just came up blank-It was syncing but showing no graphics.
My video probe on the last proms showed graphics so I know the fault was later. Found the last buffer in the video output had gone (7407 at IC40).
Replaced that and found the CPU was dead.
Swapped in mine from my bootleg Phoenix and tried the test rom but was getting memory errors. Unfortunately kept getting different results so I wasn't sure which ram to replace but then the test rom wouldn't even run.

It just started to boot to garbage with no sign of the test rom running.
Using my Phoenix as a test I found that if the 1st four rams were bad it would give a static screen so I socketed the 1st four 2114 ram chips (40,41,42,43 on the video board).
I put known good ram from my phoenix in but go no change and the ram from this board worked fine in my bootleg.
Got errors coming from the LS374 (IC1) that handles the data so changed that but still no boot.
Checking the 2716 test rom I found that pin 19 (A10) was showing as not connected. checked and it had continuity to pin 11 of the LS125 at IC10 on the CPU board so I checked that chip and also got errors. A piggyback of the LS125 booted the board and the test ran without errors.
Replaced the test rom with the game rom and games appears to be working now.
Just need to check controls and later levels.
So in the end it was a bad LS125 that handled the higher address lines that was the main fault.

I got the game running by grounding the credit and start buttons and was surprised to hear background music.
Never played a Pleiades that had background music before and I recognize the tune as the same one as plays in the background of space demon (A space firebird clone).

Were all the Pleiades I played back in the day boots I wonder?

Pleiades and Phoenix use quite similar hardware which can be tricky to work on (not only because of the shared data/address bus but also because of its rather unique methods of working which take a bit of studying to understand what it's doing)

Running the test ROM in a single ROM board can help as it lets the test programme run but avoids using the original board hardware that selects the data/address bus and EPROMs.

There are quite a few versions of code out there for both Phoenix and Pleiades, original and bootleg (some not in mame) and a few different tunes, but mame doesn't come close to getting the background music right

I'm surprised there was so many niggles with that one though mate, it was sold to me as working by a respected member. I really don't know what happened as there were pictures of it running before shipping.

I like the game a lot, it holds quite a bit of nostalgia for me. Yeah, just like the sound on Phoenix, in mame the sound isn't correct when compared to the original PCB. The main reason I wanted to own both the PCB's in this series.

It has a lot of potential to being a better game experience than Phoenix though, but, it just misses the mark. I think if it was a bit busier on some stages with more enemies on screen it would be more attractive to play. The interactivity of the radar dishes on the 1st stage is a nice touch, and those walkers that lay the barriers are very cool. It's a classic game imo.

Thanks again for taking this one on mate, it's appreciated.

It's the nature of the hobby dude.

A board can be fine one minute then a chip fails and another can go under the stress of testing since the PCB is being turned on/off all the time.

At least it exposes chips that are on their way out anyway.

This is why with this hobby some aptitude for 'tinkering' is a real requirement.

I'm just lucky things have clicked enough for me to do these sort of repairs.

As for Pleiades it's another of those games I played a lot back in the day so it holds good memories. It always struck me as Phoenix with different graphics even though the extra touches you mentioned (and the landing sequence) made it different enough to play and enjoy plus the FX are quite iconic to me too.
