I haven't had a playstation since ps2 but a dirt cheap PS5 fell into my lap as it needs the hdmi port replaced. Anyway he said it was a 820gb (I think?) model but there's no M.2 drive in the console, does this mean it's got no storage or is the storage on the board and the m.2 slot is for extra storage? will it boot up without the m.2 drive?

yeah, depending on how many games and which ones you are going to play, you may want to just keep an eye on the better HDDs for when they drop a bit in price, i dont have one in mine as i only ever have about 4 or 5 games installed at once, good console though
