Re: [ukvac] TECH: Hanterex
[a bit long]
I seem to remember ages ago when i was farting around with my space
invaders->RGB hack in one of my uprights, i had a similar decision to make.
Now, i had to put a 900 chassis on a previously 900e fitted tube. I think..
The upshot of it was, i put in a complete hantarex tube and chasis of one
sort, it worked fine for 10 minutes until i made a stupid, stupid, stupid
mistake thinking hantarex chasis should be linked to mains earth. (don't do
this
a big pop later and i had a dead chasis
so a few weeks later i
got another chassis, and went to fit it. finding the tube had a different
plastic plug on the end, and the inability to plug the afformentioned neck
board in, i asked my operator mate. He said its a common thing, one chassis
wont fit on all tubes
solution? well, literally, the plastic plug on the
neck, right on the pins, is hot-glued, or more commonly siliconed on. be
very careful, but cut/scrape/hack/chew the silicone away and pull the
plastic housing upwards. Thing is, you have to find another tube with the
correct plastic housing on and rob that, or you can buy the plugs still.. my
mate pulled one off a junked tube and give to me, i was lucky. whacked it
on, bingo, i was back in business..
the reason for the difference? well, the first (earlier design) meant the
neck board contacts for the guns were 'leaned against'. the neck board just
pushed on, this meant in the field a chassis could be swapped out quicker
(the theory). But this gave poor contact for such high (or critical) loads,
hantarex soon learned from dodgy neck board contact problems, and changed
the design to a snug old-style turned pin socket type thing where contact
was made on multiple sides of the pin, along the whole length making it much
more reliable. so the transition from say the 900 to the 900e may be the
jump where they changed the neck board plastic housings. i dunno, i can't
quote models as i havn't been able to get to my machines for some time now
I'm just sorry i don't remember offhand what chasis or tube model/make it
was i was working with, but it gives you a hinter, the neck plugs might be
different, but don't panic, they can be changed with care
