As far as I remember, the 900 and 900E cannot be swapped without hackery,
BUT the 900E and the 9000 are interchangable tubes.
Interesting point about mains earthing to the chassis being a bad move,
all 3 of my 9000's have chassis tied to mains ground from source, and
never had any problems.
Maybe its just the 900 series that dont like earthed chassis?
