After filling a few gaps in my Retro Gamer collection, I rearranged my bookshelves giving them pride of place along the top with all the spines lined up nice and colourful. Then in comes my son, aged 9, and says, 'What a lot of magazines you've got, daddy, do you ever read them?'. Now, while this gave my inner Buddhist an instant pang of guilt, it's taken me so long to rebuild my collection, there's no way I'd even think of parting company with it again so soon. Having said that, it got me thinking that maybe I should get some more use out of it, maybe even let the kids have a look. So I pulled one down at random, think it was issue 36, and thumbed through it. What caught my eye wasn't the home computer retrospectives or the arcade overviews, but the 4 pages of scud! I had completely forgotten about the adverts for sordid adult chat lines, and I was genuinely shocked. Obviously there's considerably more graphic material only a few clicks away on the interweb. But what to do about the incongruous ads? Cut em out?

TTape over them maybe? With electrical tape :-D
It does irritate me, even on the web when you like games and the ads tailored for you are singles now! Hot ladys! Like we couldn't ever possibly be married

They did stop the adverts for the chatlines at a certain point in the magazines long life, as most readers complained about them, they switched to more gaming related advertising, so after a certain issue things should be fine for younger readers...sorry I don't know which issue it was. I might say on their forum, as I remember it being hotly debated.

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure the numbers no longer work. I remember calling one when I was about 10 from the back pages of Sinclair User, and it was a pretty naff experience to be honest! Not the best experience I've ever had for 38p a minute.

Good point, but it was more the photos than the numbers I was worried about! Good job they stopped.
