Hey Guys/Gals. So today I am looking at a sega Shinobi original from 1987. The board is in a right old mess and the picture don't show how bad they really are. I have 3 for repair (Shinobi,Golden Axe And Wonderboy - Dragon Lair) and this is the best out of the 3 !!! But anyway back to the shinobi ……… I am sitting on the fence, Do I , Don't I repair ???? As I have been tipping from one side to the other I thought I would ask the community and see what comes back. Anyone who reads this please leave a comment to help me pick. The main issues are :-

1)Missing components

2)Tracks Missing / Damaged (Liquid - Will need to check pretty much every track - Gulp !)

3)Will need De suiciding - Audio (No Major issue - Had CPU replaced at some point)

4)Dry Joints everywhere (More dry joints than a students bedroom !)

5)Bad Joints & Attempted repairs

6)No Video Or Audio

7)Has been hacked and converted to Jamma (This happened a lot in the past , Why they did not buy or make a connector is beyond me !!!! )

May be more issues , Not sure till I get down to it.

A Few Pics below of what we have up to now ……..[sub][/sub][sup][/sup]

Again my camera is rubbish & wont do close ups very well.

So guys/Gals what do you think ….. Yeh or Ney ????/

Well, you’ll never sell it as a ‘minter’, so it’s just if you want to own and play it.

Are all the dark spots track rot?

I think when you get a board where every component is knacked, including customs and it’s all rotten, it has to be a spare parts job - guess you can call that in this instance.

As an aside, my brother once got a Splatterhouse to fix and it looked like it had come from the bottom of the ocean (everything dead and rotten ), so he said it wasn’t worth fixing. The twat of an owner then punted it for $600 as ‘untested’. A month later it arrives back at my brother again, sent from the new owner...

Hi John , Yeh looks like board rot. Have checked about 10 traces and strangely they are all ok, This was my other big issue with this. If I get it working how long will it last ?? No ones knows.

I would be keeping the board for me if I get it to work I don't tend to sell unless I have duplicates. CPU has been replaced so just checking roms to see if they are ok. Also need to find out what roms need to be changed to the unprotected ones, Not done one of these before.

I could stick it on ebay and I would probably get a bit but I aren't that type of person and knowing how bad it is I wouldn't sell it, Unlike the twat you mentioned !!!

Thanks for the reply,

Dave.

Hi Steve, Thanks for reply. That was my thought be honest as they will all need de-suiciding. Only thing is this is the cleanest one ! The others don't have the board rot but 1 is liquid damage. Suppose I will strip them and see what is what.

Cheers,

Dave.

Well, if they do get scrapped and the wide rom board (golder axe
type I believe) isn't shot to bits I've always fancied a plug in Altered
Beast..

However, personally I wouldn't scrap 'em just yet depends on how pushed you are for space. I'd power 'em all up as they are not super rare games and see if any of them do anything, presumably a wall of no audio/black screens awaits however.

I guess technically you don't need to check *every* track, just enough to get to the stage where the cpu should be running. How bad are the batteries? I think most of my sega pcbs still have the original batteries and mainly still working apart from super hang on, and enduro racer. They do seem to last a long time, even in storage with no power applied. But some are staring to show signs of leakage which is obviously a very bad thing.

Yeh don't have to check all the tracks. I am waiting for a 56 pin edge connector at the minute so cant power the other two up (Wont power the golden axe as its liquid and rusty so would need work first). The shinobi has been wire converted to Jamma but at the minute I am getting Halt Lo on Z80 so its not getting the info from the main CPU's (I Assume). The golden axe and the Wonderboy both have original cpu/s batteries in, The golden axe is corroded and the + lead is missing completely, The wonderboy I have not checked yet. The shinobi already had 68k replaced and Set 3 put onto game board. All 3 still have the original Z80/Battery fitted. I will get 1 out of the 3 working either way. Need to get diagrams for the board but not looked yet.

Thanks for your reply,

Dave.

P.S If any has the diagrams it would be appreciated !

Always sad to see something consigned to scrap. Eventually there will be nothing left.
But yeah, I'd say if the customs / SMD stuff is totally gone, the future doesn't look bright.
Great shame, because those are 3 really nice games. To this day I still don't have an original WBIII. Used to play that a lot in a village pub skittles alley.
