[ukvac] SI/GDarius - Gamer, Techie or Collector
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.Andrew Fairey Wrote:<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Oh joy... what a top comparison, even if not serious (-:

Picture the scene, a GDarius PCB and an Invaders, the UKVACers line up
and have to pick a board..... Dilemma !, the classic or the real players
game (shields up ...).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SNIP<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Interesting comparison. As you told me when I visited your place, G-Darius
is rare in this country, and not many will have seen it. Perhaps you could
post some screen shots. Without doubt, it is the fasted, slickest shoot'em
up I've ever seen with amazing graphics and gameplay coupled with the fact
that it NEVER SLOWS DOWN. (Is it a dedicated or does it run on a modern
cartridge thingy?) Back to back, it made your Salamander and Nemesis look
like New Zealand Story.

BUT, I contradict myself when I say that gameplay is NOT everything. In your
pictured scene, I'd choose the SI every time. It depends whether you're
(mainly) a gamer, a collector or a techie.

I hardly ever play my games. (Shock! - although when I do, I get hooked!)
Much of the pleasure comes in talking about them with other collectors and
other non-collector friends. If I say G-Darius to a friend, he says 'Ah,
Playstation!' (or Saturn or whatever), and I wave him goodbye. As a techie,
the interest for me is looking at the technology, and comparing them with
similar technology around at the time, the things I learned at Uni, and the
stuff I work with every day.

Most importantly, as a collector too, it is the surrounding materials around
the outside (flyers, manuals, diagrams) and whether I can fix it when it
dies. The technology was new in the '80s, and the games were really well
supported with manuals and other documentation. Now, just like in all
electronics fields, games are almost throwaway. If I need to, when my Space
Invaders board dies, I reckon I'll be able to fix it, but I don't think I'll
be fixing your G-Darius in 10 years!

Which one is 'better'? What does 'better' mean? If you're a gamer, G-Darius
is better. If you enjoy collecting and the scene & social aspects around it,
SI wins hands down. If you're a techie, you can forget G-Darius, the
circuits aren't widely available. (Or are they? It'd be great to see them.)

SI is a classic for this reason; Ask somone in the street to name a video
game - the answer is SI, Pacman or Sonic.

Perhaps we could all have a UKVAC weighting Gamer/Collector/Techie/Trader:

100% Gamer - Suffers eye strain, buys Arcade mag, has no real friends,
own a Playstation.
100% Collector - Has loads of PCBs, mostly untested or dead, suffers from a
lack of space, wife left some time ago.
100% Techie - Has more circuit diagrams than PCBs, works in electronics,
probably a bit of a mutant.
100% Trader - Can't help buying and selling anything, car-boots
regularly, also trades guitars, radios and other pap.

Personally, I would be 20/30/40/10.

What do you think?

Hehe, number 4 seems to be based on me :)
I'd say I'm 10/30/20/40

Hhmm, think I come under this classification:

30/60/10/0

but must add I'm probably the most rubbish game player ever in the history of arcade collectors!
I've never managed to complete Strider! Any tips anyone on the last level?

ok, i think we're stepping into 'geek codes' here.. but that's not a major
problem, i'd probably be:
