Enjoyable podcast, it helped keep me sane on a drive into London this week.
I am genuinely surprised at the reaction to the game though, it's one of my top five all time and I always thought it was considered a bit of a classic. Still, each to their own.
I think there is something a bit off with the gameplay in Mame though, either that or I'm getting older. I used to regularly top 10K on real hardware but I usually struggle to break 6K on Mame, my score of 9k+ was a bit of a fluke really (that was me and not Roger Cantor at #3, Vic got us mixed up
).
There was one gameplay element that you missed out on, if you destroy all 50 enemies in each wave you get a "perfect" bonus of 1000 points. The enemies only pass by once so if you miss one you lose the chance of the bonus, apart from the last group in each wave which will pass by several times.
The was actually a sequel to this too, sort of. Space Demon was made by Nintendo but licensed out to someone else. All they seem to have done though is changed the graphics of Space Firebird and mixed the levels up. They also chose a colour palette that makes your eyes bleed and made your ship much bigger and easier to hit.
