So i dont really like RPGs, never a fan of bethesda games but my son got this on the 1st Sept, played a few hours and thought it was fantastic, not your typical mythical RPG sort of game, loved the variety to the different missions..but i stopped playing as it was on his Steam log in.

released today, thought i'd grab it as part of the xbox pass thing, been playing today for about 4 hours and decided to do one side mission rather than the main quest and this game is just outstanding, everything about my newest gameplay has been completely different

it really is an eye opener for me, i rarely play modern games but this is just superb, there are lots of loading screen and lots of wandering about, but you are generally always aiming for something, the space combat is really good, and not easy...and i havent even scratched the surface on building my own settlement and modifying my ship

if you have gamepass, well worth a download and a few hours to see if its your cup of tea, i thought i would just be overwhelmed after a few hours but the complete opposite is happening, im being sucked in big time

It's a brilliant game despite some prime examples of Bethesda RPG jank. The quality of materials, lighting and rendering is way beyond what you'd expect, and through some extra-terrestrial miracle it's arguably more stable and polished than most modern triple-A games. You just have to gloss over those moments when, say, you slaughter the entire population of a space pirate base and their leader, whom you just shot in the face, turns up five minutes later on a nearby planet asking why you're late for a mission. Plenty of opportunities in the game but you can forget going off-script.

The mods are going to be absolutely nuts. This game's going to be doing big numbers ten years from now.

I'm at 38 hours and haven't even touched the main questline yet. In fact I've only just built my first outpost, at which point the game does a very good job of marrying all the good bits of No Man's Sky to something quasi-open-world that feels a whole lot bigger than you'd expect. It's surprising how much of those planets is explorable once you have a reason to stay on one. Also makes you appreciate how simply having the main quest there, even if you never use it, gives a much greater sense of place and purpose to all its other systems.

Are you guys playing on PC or console?
If on PC, what your PC specs and what image quality/resolution settings are you using?

Cheers.

I have a Titan RTX, 64gb of fairly middling RAM and fairly old six-core i7, and I'm getting great results from using FSR and 75% dynamic resolution scaling. You really don't notice the latter nowadays. All the graphics settings are otherwise on max.

im playing on my PC, it runs ok with my oldish gaming rig(1080ti, i7 8700, 16gb RAM) pauses from time to time but is very playable

my son who has an up to date AMD gaming PC though, it just bombs out on him all the time, so he has started playing it on his Xbox console

it seems like its very poorly optimised for some AMD set ups, even with brand new drivers, im being told this isnt a new thing with bethesda though

Cheers for that guys. :)

What resolution are you guys playing at?

The reason I ask is that a work colleague wants to play the game with mouse and keyboard so console is out of the question for now, but he doesn't have a gaming PC. So I said to him he can borrow my old gaming PC to see if he likes the game enough to justify buying a new PC.

My old PC is a 6700k @ 4.6ghz, 32gb ram and RTX 2070. I played through both PC Spiderman games @ 1440p and it plays God of War without issues at 1440p. It does appear that the game is badly optimised as mentioned, if the game runs like a sack of crap with this PC then it may not be worth playing.

I've also got an older rig I use for Windows XP (Both 32/64 bit versions) and that has 32gb ram and a 1680v2 @ 4.4ghz, but although it has decent core count that CPU may be too old now. The PC has surprised me though, so it may surprise me again on Starfield.

The game does look really interesting, but I have so many games I haven't finished yet how will I find time for Starfield!

Not sure I'd ever have the time for modern gaming these days (since the arrival of a child) better just to stick to arcade stuff quick 5 mins here & there looks amazing though.

brilliant game, pulled me off diablo IV , for it on my Xbox
i can see why people don't like it, but i think a lot of it is a bit stupid, i've put about 10 hours into it and it isn't my kind of thing but it is a great game. my son has put about 80 hours into it so far and while he has completed the main story once, he hasnt even scratched the surface on the side missions/ship building and visiting all the other solar systems
