Ok so its been a while since I did one of these and will keep it as short as I can. This board has had a lot done to is. I took pics of the board and the faulrt before the repair but i cant for the life of me find them so I dont have screen shots of the issue or the SMD's prior to the work !!

Faults :-

1) Graphics Issues - Lines all down the screen

2) Audio scratchy and barely hearable

Ok so a quick look over the board and it seems someone has had a go at re capping some of the board and made , sadly , a rate mess is doing so. First off these boards are a NIGHTMARE to recap so to be fair they tried there best. I assume they attempted to recap to fix the graphics issues. I have circled the caps that had been replaced but its does not show how bad they actually were.

A couple of the bottom , Looks grim :-

The board looks in reasonable nick but has had a wack to the top right SMD IC24 - So first job was to fix this. I bent the pins back the best I could and re soldered them. These never go back straight unless you completely remove the chip bend pins back and replace. I dont like doing tis unless 100% necessary as it can cause issue and is not easy. I was happy with the work.

Fired the board up to test and no change in graphics. After running the game and pushing on IC57 I noticed the image got better , Not gone but better so I suspected that this was the fault. I hate reworking SMD ic as its very hard and my eye are prety much knackers , But hey ho had to be done !!

After re-working both sides and checking that I had not bridged nothing (You need a microscope else you have no chance of seeing it with the naked eye), I dont have the best microscope but its good into for me to check.

Fired the board up and ............

Yeh !! The lines have gone , Sorry i had no original to show you (Must try harder next time !)

So next was the horrible scratchy audio , With most of these its caps and as I needed to remove the filter caps someone had tried to replaced I decided to the Audio caps at the same time. As said above these are hard and take a lot of heat to remove so you have to be mega careful, And even being mega careful it can go wrong. Luckily it did not for me and even though it took a while i replaced them :-

So thats the main audio section and this is the rest :-

After booting I was happy to hear all sound were good again !!!

So basically thats its the game all runs and plays realy nice now. Only think left was to clean all the flux away (Hate it when its not done !) and have a play.

Few more of the game itself :

I must say this a realy good game but hard ??? Not sure what others think.

So that's it , Hopefully its a good read for some. If you want to leave a comment please do, It makes a difference to me and others to see people are reading and appreciating these.

You can click the Thanks at the top also if you like.

Nicely done Dave! Always enjoy reading these repairs, should start taking pictures and posting a few myself. Had a board a while back with the same capacitor issues, someone had made a right mess if it, got most of the remaining holes clear and had to resort to drilling a couple out, but finally got there!

Nice work Dave

I’ve never played the game myself but always interested to see what other games are out there.

Appreciate you taking the time to post a repair log, it can be time consuming keeping full details of the repair as you go along, taking pictures and then writing it all up. I know I’ve personally benefited from other’s logs so do appreciate it myself when people take the time to post theirs.

Looks nice Dave. I have a dead PCB of this one that I've never got to (doesn't fire up at all).

Dead timing XTALs? I have no idea.

There's a few good games on this hardware like Growl & Liquid Kids. I always wondered if the pcbs were easy to convert between them.

This one did fire up so never looked into the hardware that much , Just had a look what did what as we normally do and go from there. I would say test Roms / Crystals and Program memory first off though. I tend to steer clear of stuff with SMD normally but had a few just lately and I am no expert with them although I can remove . rework ect.

I have a TMNT that has rotten legs on customs and all sort of issues, Lost a pad from that when I removed the IC though so I was extremely angry with myself ! lol. This has so many issues its unreal , Going on hard pile for a while I think. I made it worse not better.

Great stuff!!

I had a crack at reflowing a dead Neo Geo 1 slot motherboard this weekend.

I’ve zero experience with that sort of thing, and I was just following instructions rather than having any idea what I was doing… it did not go well

I also nearly scooped up a dead Hyper Sports to send you, but I figured it’s one thing to ask if you have one, and quite another to just start throwing broken ones at you!

Great work on this board. I love threads like this because I get to live vicariously through people more capable than me, and now I’ve found out about another game I’d never heard of. Sweet!

If its the one I am thinking of then it was a Hyper Olympic / Track and Field. I spotted it and thought of you , But then realised it was not sports.

Dave.

P.S SMD are a biatch ! Its why i stay away. I did a Soul Edge SMD last night that had been knocked - is all working and ok now - Not 100% straight but hey will never be unless replaced.
