Still listening to this podcast, haven't got through it yet but I am enjoying it very much so far.
Massive thanks for the Birthday shout out, much appreciated!

I haven't yet had a proper go at 1942, but what another classic well loved game that is... actually my housemate fell in love with RGP's cabaret cab when we went up to the New Frontier arcade last year, he reckoned it would be on his list of top 5 cabs to get - pity he's not a collector (I'm working on him though!) Congrats to Shaun for getting hold of the cab for himself, will this make him take the plunge & purchase his first dedicated machine??

I checked out the Vectrex homebrew games you mentioned - wow they are impressive! Loving Vector Patrol, it's just like the arcade game with parallax scrolling, the music, everything. These games *really* make me want a Vectrex even more... I've lusted after one of these for a while now so I might make the plunge.

In regards to what I've been up to recently, I am still plodding along with the Gorf resto, got the control panel all rebuilt, it's all clean & shiny now.
As well as that I've started work on my new namco pole position cockpit, actually this has been dominating my time over the bank holiday weekend & the last week but I'm really getting into it. I just love it when cabs start to clean up after some elbow grease. I am sure you will know all about this Vic looking at your Death Race cab - what a beauty!

It's gonna be great to see you guys at arc-aid, really looking forward to that and the meet at Steve's, as Nes4Life said this is one of the arcade highlights of the year for me, and the 10 pence guys being there will make it even better

Thanks again for another awesome podcast, now I need to go and listen to the rest...

Hi Guys,

Just downloaded this weeks game - VOLFIED by Taito.

Firstly - I had never heard of, let alone played this one. Totally passed me by this game. Although having now played it, it does remind me of something I played on some platform at home, but I cannot remember what this was for the life of me.

Secondly - I am playing this on a pants laptop keyboard (excuses coming in already!!)

Thirdly, after 3/4 of an hour playing here's my best score (FOR NOW !!!), however as no-one else has posted yet, technically if you closed the comp now, my meagre effort would win !!!!!

Gotta say, I quite like this, although I think there are probably techniques that when used would greatly improve your score. Still not sure why it decides to end each level when it does, which will greatly affect your % complete bonus. Can anyone help me with this (or any other top tips)

Cheers guys

Neil.

There are lots of high score tricks on Volfied. It is possible to get a million point bonus after completing round 1, for example.

Thought as much, think I will need to read up/work out a few of these first. There is some improvement though....

I've had the 1m bonus on levels 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11, just not all in the same game. 14 is possible to get 1m too but I haven't managed it yet. I believe that 9,999,990 is the highest possible score you can get, so you really just need to million point these levels plus get decent percentages on the remaining ones to get the maximum score.

There's some good gameplay videos up on YouTube showing some techniques.

I'll be having another crack at this later, to be honest, when I first played this I thought it was crap but it's actually rather good, just not 1942 good

I have to say, unfortunately, I hate Volfied so much I cannot bear to play it any more. I find the collision detection way to sensitive and the movement sticking all the time drives me mad.
I shan't be submitting a score on this one I am afraid.

I very much enjoyed #37, it was very energetic but it might be because it was a sunny day too.
The song you you use for the intro and the end is a master piece, you could play it in full length in the end or at least a bit longer to give the listeners time to land....

It was the sequel to qix. Maybe you played that.

Volfied is a great game. I recently found that board in a raid on my mum and dads attic

Bought it over 20 years ago but forgot I had it.

I have to agree with Tronads. This is not a game I like, for the reasons he mentions. So I went back and played Qix - nope, don't like that either. The whole 'sticky movement' (tm) thing does my box in!

You need to play with a 4 way stick. If you collide with your own 'trail' it seems like it sticks and you need to finish it off against solid 'ground' to not get hit.

I'm definitely not in the running for a decent score, won't shame myself by submitting one either by the looks of it, but thanks for introducing me to a game that I would have run 100 miles from playing. It's one I'll come back to from time to time.

Hi guys,

I'm afraid I'm bowing out of this one too although for different reasons.

I actually quite like the game itself, yes the controls are a bit sticky at times and you have to be very precise, but I don’t mind that.

For me it's the ability to get a million point bonus by trapping the level's main bad guy on the first move, which means that I am no longer actually playing the game, but instead I am simply waiting out the level sat in a corner waiting for the sprite to eventually stop near to me so that I can encase it.

Which leads to an incredibly boring experience. I really like the normal game play but in a high score challenge it's just pointless.

Sorry guys but I'm out.

Neil - instead if going for scores, try going for levels?
The game ends at level 16. I'm going to try and finish it on 1 credit when I eventually get to play it myself.

I don't think Volfied is a bad game but it's not entirely my cup of tea. I don't have too much problem with 'sticking'...I'm just no good at it. Level 2 with a score of 45470 is the best I could do after about 5 or 6 goes.
