Just finished listening dudes.

Have to say I am absolutely devastated you thought Crazy Balloon was crap. Once the balloon movements 'click' it's such an enjoyable game, and being able to go through the green and purple high score areas you should be able to hit 2000 points just by clearing level 1 this way.

I'm interested to know what others that played it thought of it. Maybe it's a marmite game? I know others love it. It's in my Top 10 for sure.

Yes I have not one, but TWO Taito Missile X machines. The PCB has just been fixed by P-man for one of them. He had to reverse engineer an analog 'chip circuit thing' (official name for it - we found from stealing top secret plans from the basement of Taito) that had failed and the parts were unobtanium. The PCB controls flasher bulbs inside the mirrored play area (like Space Invaders but the diorama is far more advanced than the moon backdrop - it has multiple depths so the jeeps and other vehicles drive in front and behind physical objects mirrored onto the monitor). The flasher bulbs help with effects and make it even more cool. If anyone has an interest I don't need two, the other one is available.

I am not certain but pretty confident (70/30) Midway copied Taito, only because they licensed Western Gun as Gun Fight and Gunman as Boot Hill. Information from this pairing is sparse at best, but I would imagine Taito would have had some interest in Midway developed games also, so some must have gone the other way as it were.

The Universal Cosmic Series is totally awesome, some games are hit and miss but we can all agree that the cabinet artwork is frickin' awesome. I personally would love to get a Cosmic Avenger and Snap Jack. Another I would love is Cosmic Monsters - the upright is crazy 1337.

To finish, kids just got in the way, I did play Crazy Balloon but it takes a while to get used to the balloon movements. My best Crazy Balloon score was round Alex's house. circa 19k, so I got beat anyway.

Look forward to the next one chaps.

Really enjoyed the podcast.
I'll see what I can do about a Cosmic Alan vid. Only if I can crack 100K though. Like you said, the aliens are absolute gits from level 11.

Excellent podcast as ever. Another game with 4 direction buttons you forgot about is Space Zap.

I've had a quick go on the next game and glad we've finally got a shooter again, will be posting a score for this one after not bothering with Crappy Balloon after a couple of goes.

nice podcast guys.

The coating on the leafs is copper oxide. It builds up as the copper oxidises (combines with oxygen). It's the copper equivalent of rust. I'm finding that this is something that really effects connectors on old machines. I ended up re-crimping every connector on Gorf because they were so oxidised.

Here's a pic

Good work chaps!

Loved the Dr Seuss parody. I used to read that one to my kids,
and it was so much more fun than the Janet&John, Peter&Jane
boring stuff I was forced to read as a nipper. [I disagree with
sentiment as far as Crazy Balloon is concerned but that's a
different story].

Seuss-trivia for the pendants pedants like me is that he pronounced his
own nom de plume as 'Zoice'. After I found out, I adopted this of
course, but nobody knows who the heck I'm talking about.

I'm pretty sure Krull is on the Gottlieb hardware. I have a few of these
massive boards to help keep my MACH3 running [it shared
the main PCB and with 3 Stooges too if I remember correctly].

Oooo maybe I'll have to dig my BBC micro out and play some old stuff.

Great pod cast guys,I have to say I am with Alpha on this one I think it's a good game, frustrating yes but you do get used to the swing after while and it becomes very addictive.
If you liked this game try Kuri Kuri Kurin on the Nintendo Gba it's one of my favourites and is very similar but improved game play.Chuckie egg2016-08-25 20:24:13

I'd be interested!

Loved this podcast chaps very well done as usual
Interesting to see 2 games covered is this going to be a regular thing?

I like both these games and have particular memories of playing them: Crazy Balloon I first played on a cocktail cab in my friends Dad's Army and Navy shop, it had a downstairs part and randomly had this cab to play. That was when you found games everywhere like laundries and cafes. Okay the graphics are basic but it has decent gameplay. If you've played earthworm jim 2 the blind cave salamander level reminds me of it where you have to float around inside a lung I believe it is. Anyway decent enough for an early game.

I first played Alan at a fairground (most games where played at fairgrounds rather than arcades). I thought it was a good version of Galaxian and really liked the chef boss I remember it swooping down fast but this could of been a bootleg board. I'm pretty sure it was in a jamma cab not the dedicated one.

I recently rediscovered zero hour also in the cosmic series, its a quirky but pretty decent shooter. Universal gets a bad rap and there are some sketchy games but also some very good ones.
It's interesting we had so many dedicated universal cabs in the UK I don't know if they were made here or shipped from Japan?
Certainly some of my favourite cab designs though.

Thanks again for the pod look forward to the next one :)
