Don't you just hate it when your Linux installation changes something
fundamental and doesn't bother to inform you about it?

Apologies to anyone who has emailed me in the last 36 hours or so - your
email is either bounced or lost. Please resend!

Thanks

You're VERY wrong. Gentoo just updated portage to a new version and it just
decided to remove a whole load of USE flags without asking first. As I auto
compile everything updated within portage on a cron every morning it
automatically recompiled EVERYTHING without mysql support (amongst other
less important flags.) My installation relies heavily on mysql and so
nearly everything stopped working. There's a LOAD of people having trouble
with this.

Linux is by far the better operating system between itself and Windows, but
it's by no means perfect. This isn't the first time Gentoo have done
something ridiculous, the last time off the top of my head was with
ip_tables splitting it into xtables which just made a whole load of
duplicate options to enable in the kernel else it wouldn't work.

PS. I am a LINUX MASTER btw, I don't make mistakes ;o)

Meh - I've been using 'emerge -uD --newuse world' daily using vixie-cron
without problems for over two years now. As long as you're good with
etc-update it never (usually) causes any problems - there shouldn't be any
reason to have to use 'pretend' other than plain curiosity as it won't
overwrite anything in your /etc (or other personal settings files) until you
run etc-update. I do love my Gentoo installation ) It does indeed rock
;o) I'd give up Windows completely if I didn't need to use it for work (

Incidentally I assume you don't use Gentoo then - you can't run 'emerge
-pretend -sync' there is no '-sync' and even if you run 'emerge -pretend
sync' there is no pretend function for sync! ;o) I'm sure you must have
meant 'emerge -p world'? ;o)
