I'm afraid that people here that DON'T want to talk about standing in
a damp garage playing games getting possibly electrocuted do not
actually belong on this list.

Let me say that again...

If you are only interested in 'playing' old videogames in your
1000-in-1 jamma box, or your MAME arcade cabinet, you need to go
elsewhere... there are TONNES of sites/forums/groups on the net for
that sort of malarky. Here is not one of them.

If you on the other hand, are interested in PLAYING THE REAL THING,
and Video Arcade Collecting... then you're in the right place.

I think we need to really ask people to choose a camp. UKVAC cannot be
everythign to all people... we are a bunch of people that collect the
REAL THING. Yes they're big, they're heavy, they're dirty, they break
down, we play them in damp garages... But by golly, thats what we're
into.

I wont have ANYONE bad mouthing this arcane way of life...

UKVAC is not about collecting ROMS, or multigame pcbs, its about
COLLECTING the real thing, its not really even about PLAYING THEM -
thats just a pleasant side effect. COLLECTORS is what we are, daft as
we may be.

Am i wrong here? because i'm afraid i've been here a lot longer than a
lot of you and i know what it means to be in UKVAC, some people try to
make it something else, but like bruce said, you can't please everyone.

UKVAC is a niche... our niche is old videoarcade game COLLECTING in
the UK, it is not about MAME or 'all aspects' of videogaming. You hear
me?

There's a bit of an old-skool rant for you.

As for forum/mailing list difference, i am undecided. What i do know
is, lets not be steered by armchair gamers who wont get their hands
dirty... we are die-hard collectors, we have to be, or all the
armchair collectors will turn our mouldy wooden boxes 'that only play
one game' into freaking MAME-ONSTROSITIES.

There :)

Its fine if you just want to lurk, and to hear about other people
banging on about them.. no problem!!

But when someone suggests 'just get a multigame' or starts talking
roms or emulations or MAME CABS, no.. not allowed.

A lot of collectors have MAME cabs in addition to their regualr cabs,
this is fine too, but please don't talk about them.

Here is an analogy :
Like being on a Rolls-Royce car owner/collector/discussion list.. you
can aspire to own one, you can read all about people who own them and
how they collect and maintain them. Talk about your own, ask advice on
how to keep them going, heck, talk about other things, but don't even
dare think about talking about how practical and reliable your new
Toyota Prius is... we don't want to hear it. Off-topic banter is
actually ok, we're a bunch of people that sometimes meander onto other
topics, this is fine too when kept to a minimum and marked as [OT]...
but.. i would stress that talking about MAME cabs and stuff on the
list, even if marked as [OT] is *still not cool*.. it gives the wrong
impression, and is not why we are here, go ask those questions and
have those discussions elsewhere.

I want to carry this trend on, making it VERY clear from now on that
we stick to our guns, and stick to collecting original old videogames.
There are way too many other places to talk about everything but
these, so lets try and stick to our niche.

so, hi again Puckman!

Might it be worth a hybrid method?

At the moment, if you post to a thread on the forum it emails you when that
thread's updated... excellent.

Maybe keep that, and have a daily "these are the threads that had activity"
mail sent out too.

I'm more than happy logging onto a notice board to post, but find logging on
on the offchance of new posts more of a hassle.

Either way, though, great to hear from you all again :)

> I prefer to get my message the real retro way, by telegram.

This is all misguided rubbish. I asked Rav this when he first set the forum
up, it's just like the J+ forum, you go to the Edit Membership and subscribe
to the ones you want delivered by email. Job done.

If you want it all sent by email, subscribe to all the forums, there's about
10 of them and it takes a couple of seconds to do it. Just go and do it and
then we break the link to the Yahoo! group list, that's probably the biggest
reason why no-one migrated over in the first place!!

The only minus is that you can't see who posted it from the Sender column
(like J+), they all come from UK-VAC Forum.

Having the Yahoo! list is a waste of time, no-one posts and they never will,
it's a dead community. The forum is the last hope, because it groups
together topics, so you can see the history, there's not enough momentum in
the email list to make it much of a community any more and these are exactly
the reasons why J+ does work.

Personally, I don't think UKVAC will ever recover to anything like what it
was, apart from the occasional meet, be it on the back of the pinball show
(did I mention this before?), Ravs arcade, the Indian in Honiton, Trev's
garage or the pseudo-UKVAC Swissmeet that I or Andy Baker will probably hold
again sometime over the Winter.

But I'm hoping to be proven wrong...

And Welburn, stop harassing people, you can rant all you want, but if you
keep doing it, you'll only end up ranting to yourself because everyone will
have left (again).

Agreed Steve (Great to hear from you btw :)))! The main thing is we are all talking again, and that is the main thing.

Be assured that no decisions will be made with out consensus. I'm sure a happy median will be found... if not we will all just argue as always ;)

This is all good stuff, nice to see some emails coming through again!
My vote goes for the email subscription, regardless of how easy it is to subscribe to forums and have them send me the messages as emails ...

Sadly, two of my three cabs are now non-working and I don't even want to think about my PCB's -my three year old and now twins have seen most of my spare time taken up!- I guess I will get round to dicking with it all again when I am in my 50's!!!

Oh for it to be 2000 again, and my first PCB buys from the US back in the day when eBay was worth a look.
