Updating with net boot only works if the base board is on 3.03 or higher. You have to replace the tsop flash chip with lower versions.

As ace says
If you got 3.03 firmware you can
Or needs tsop chip removing flashing
And then re fit.

If you got 3.03 firmware already
On a normal dimm not sure if CF
Adaptor will allow the 4.1 update to be flashed or not ?

Pretty sure you can update the versions on 2.xx if they work with NetBoot, its the earlier versions where there is no netboot support that you cant upgrade via Netboot, not sure if you have to go to version 3.x first and then onto 4.1 then 4.2 if you need none SEGA CF reader use.

I did read something about certain games having the firmware update on them or came with an update disk that worked with the earlier versions to upgrade to a netbootable versions of the firmware via GD-ROM.

You can update a non-NET dimm if you also have access to a NETdimm by swapping the top board over as long as its a bootable version of the firmware already on the Dimm.

I think any game discs having the update on it is an urban legend, I do have a 3.17 update disc though that I use to update 2.xx firmware dimms.

For 1.01 you have to replace / reprogram the tsop flash. From what I've seen most non net dimm boards have 1.01 but some times you get lucky, I was on the look out for 2.xx gdrom update discs to see if they work with 1.01 dimms but haven't found any yet.
