Beware the Hillman
I brought a WWF Wrestlefest PDB that had lines across the screen (well actually it looked like missing lines across the screen so not all graphics where displaying.
After asking for help and a bit of searching I read 2 different fix logs both un related to mine but game me a starting point
The First was Porchys fix log here
Porchy's Fix Log
The second place was Channelmaniac fix log here
Channelmaniac Fix Log
after reading those I understood that the Graphics data is in the 8 Custom roms on the board, from Porchy's repair log and I understood that the background was controlled by IC27 Sprite RAM from Channelmaniac's repair Log
I didn't think I had a EPROM error as mine was missing sprites rather than corrupt sprites. Atleast that what I was thinking
Then I though it has to be Sprite memory of some sort not doing its job and not displaying total graphics
So I knew that IC27 was part of this gang of chips so started looking at the board and it was pretty obvious by eye without a continuity meter to see that IC27 was indeed going to the ROMS as was IC24 and IC26
so from there I grabbed my Probe as i'm not a repairer so don't have the best repair equipment and started probing IC24, 26,27 after doing a triple quadruple probe on them at 3AM I was more confused than I started. I wasn't even sure what RAM they where let alone what the output should be. so I was relying on one being a dud and the others ok. But to my confusion they all where giving me different outputs so I was still no wiser to what the faulty chip could be.
I decided to play a risk and change all 3 so I ordered some RAM chips and some sockets.
I like working systematically so I started with changing IC24. I always test at each stage and when I plugged it in the board WORKED fined no more lines
so now I now that IC27 controls background failure and IC24 horizontal lines. I decided to change 26 and 27 just to be sure p0lus putting them on sockets is not a bad thing and yep it confirmed that it was IC24
Considering my bad luck with boards I was surprised I hit the NAIL the first time and all was fixed
A lot of Thanks for this has to go to Porchy and Channelmaniac who's fix logs gave me that starting point to work from
And thanks to all that helped me in the threads
