Xbox (original) - CRT vs LCD HD display

Hi All,

I have an original Xbox. The console was made 29/08/2002. I have a Samsung 32" LCD HD Smart TV (about 3 years old) with a component cable (5 sockets ; 2 x red, 1 x white, 1 x blue, 1 x green). The current screen output is 720 x 480 at 60 i (fps) when I play some games like OutRun 2.

I also have the option of getting a cheap 26" Sony CRT TV from around 1996. So would games like OutRun 2 look better (more arcade like) on the Sony CRT vs the Samsung 32" LCD HD TV? Should I stick to the component cable with the Sony CRT TV or use a SCART cable - which is best please?

AFAIK The arcade machine used a 31khz CRT like PC's of that era using 640x480 (480p) resolution. TV's are 15khz and will interlace the picture, displaying alternate frames at half the refresh rate to give a higher effective resolution (480i), but its inferior to the 480p the arcade uses.

Personally I'd stick with the LCD.

I'd normally err to the side of the CRTs for retro stuff but have seen how good the xbox looks on component through large LCD TVs and projectors.

Also I find there is a wild variance in how well TVs onboard processing of images works, and pretty much all LCD TVs process everything that is input, even overscanning HDMI signals input at the native resolution of the panel (WHY?!!), so actually the main question here is how good is the processing in your Samsung. Which i can't answer.

It's a guess but I'd say in this case it's probably overall best to stick with the larger LCD in this instance.

I got my first decent CRT (a Sony 26") around 1995 and I used to love playing my Sega Saturn on it - (Sega Rally and VC2 of course) then later my Dreamcast (F355 and HOTD2) and Neo-Geo (Metal Slug & Viewpoint) ! All imported NTSC @ 60hz full screen consoles of course via SCART leads...
