Ok, this isn't about MAME, but I didn't know where to post it.
I have an Asteroids cabinet, but no vector monitor. So I decided to use an emulator and a PC monitor for now.

I tried running MAME and using the HLSL effects. I purchased a cheap Radeon HD 6450 for that purpose, but it looks like it's not powerful enough. I don't get any HLSL effects at all.

So I decided to take a look at the AAE vector emulator instead. And it's great! But the problem is, the screen goes black after a while. I can still play the game, I hear the sounds etc.
I obviously don't want to reboot the cabinet every half hour. I remember reading about this problem before, and I am aware that the emulator is no longer maintained. But do you know if this was ever solved?

I thought so too.. I wrote d3d instead of auto in mame.ini. I even tried mame.exe -video d3d. But that didn't help. I also made sure to enable hlsl in mame.ini. And I tried older MAME versions.
I'm not really sure what I'm doing.. I didn't use MAME for at least 10 years.
The PC is running Windows XP with DirectX 9.0c. I can see that Direct 3D is working fine in dxdiag, and the 6450 is supposed to support shaders model 5 (and therefore 3?).
Are you sure the Radeon should be fine? It just cost £40.

It's Sapphire Radeon HD 6450 1GB DDR3.

Have you got the latest .net framework? I had similar with a machine, then updated that and it all worked straight away!

im running hlsl on a 3 year old laptop with built in intel gfx, also used to run it on an old nvidia 210, There should be nothing wrong with yours.
So to check a few more things, latest mame placed in brand new folder along with the other folders it comes with and you can see the hlsl folder with all the files inside it? no old cfg files or alternate mame.ini files in an ini folder?

Yes, I read about that too, so I tried installing all the updates I could from Windows Update. I even installed .net 1.1.

Maybe the newest version doesn't come with Windows Update? I'll check tonight, thanks.

Yes, I installed MAME from scratch, I downloaded it from mamedev.org and created a new ini file by running mame.exe -cc (if I remember correctly).
This is a fresh Windows install, I have never had any emulators running on it before.

Do anyone of you run this on Windows XP? It looks like XP only supports .net 4, not the newer 4.5.
If you do, is there any chance that you can send me your config files?
