Problem Can anyone help me out with my first KiCad project?

  • It's a simple board with two surface mount ICs. I'm struggling to complete the BOM - I'm missing Mouser part numbers for a couple of surface mount resistors.
  • The idea is to get PCBway to make a board and populate it. However, perhaps it would be cheaper to change the components to through hole rather than SMT, and solder it myself
Bit out of my depth here.

If you are new to PCB CAD software, I’d say keep it simple and just stick to through hole components (especially since it’s just 2 resistors).

You don’t need to do a BOM. Just make the simple schematics in the schematic editor, then design the PCB board layout.
Plot the Gerbers into a folder, then zip the file to upload to your PCB house.

Well PCBWay say I do need to do a BOM. I don't understand how they're going to make a PCB and populate the board without it to be honest.
The PCB layout, the circuit diagram are done.

If you are asking them to manufacture a ready built pcb with components, then yes you’ll a BOM.
If you are asking them to manufacture a standard blank PCB (where you will solder the parts yourself) then a BOM is not required.

Yes, thanks, that was my understanding.
So I either need to figure out the Mouser part numbers for a couple of surface mount resistors, or figure out how to change the ICs in the thing from SMT to DIP. And I can't achieve either of these things at the moment.

For resistors I just use R and then assign them all to a standard R footprint. Which size you choose depends on how good you are at soldering... Generally speaking the smaller you go the cheaper they get.
One thing to look out for is the size difference between 0603 and 0603 resistors!

PS
Resistor_SMD:R_0603_1608Metric is relatively easy to solder with proper magnification and a small-ish soldering iron.
