[ukvac] Defender Power Supply needed urgently
Anyone got a Defender power supply they could spare? If you do please
drop me a line and we can talk price etc - I need this pretty urgently.

Cheers,
Shaun

You can use a bog standard arcade switching PSU easily enough, the only
drawback being that the CMOS gets reset occasionally wiping out your
hi-scores and game settings.

Remember the Defender linear PSU doesn't have overvoltage protection -
I was looking at two recently: one was outputting about around 13v on
the +5v line and the other around 25v on the 12v line! It depends what
you value most - your high scores or your RAM )

I use a switcher in mine and am working on replacing the CMOS with
NVRAM to combat the loss of CMOS problem, no success as yet though.

Or course, YMMV - I'm sure there are plenty of machines out there
running with no problems on the original PSUs.

I think Sinistar PSU's do protect against overvoltage (Dave?) so you
could consider that option too.

I seem to recall either on here or on the newsgroup, that this problem
could be fixed by placing a capacitor on one of the lines to 'delay' the
powerup of one of the voltage lines - Apparently the real mc'coy
supplies one voltage a split second beore the other which allows the
cmos to reach the ready state before the entire thing powers up.

It was a thread on RGVAC.

Tried that, didn't work!
I also tried replacing the capacitor in the reset circuit with a larger
one to increase the reset time. Didn't work either :(

I'm open to futher suggestions if you have any!

How easy is it to fit one of these bog standard power supplies to a Defender then? Do they simply attach straight to teh Defender boards or do I need to do some wiring and messing around with voltages etc? Afterall, I dont wanna fry my boards. At the moment my machine is caput (keeps blowing the 12v fuses) so any solution is better than no solution. Also, where would I get one and for how much?

None at the moment, If anything occurs to me I'll let you know!

p.s. I have no williams boards, so I cannot check anything out. The main
williams game I like is Defender, and that needs the correct control
panel layout to be playable.

It's pretty easy, you can do it without altering the current wiring
harness at all.

Unplug the molex connector that goes from the linear PSU to the boards
- it's 14-pin or something.

Get a male molex conector which will plug into it and wire it up to the
switching PSU with the relevant voltage going to the relevant pin. Use
the -5v line in place of the -12v to the sound board, the rest of the
voltages are the same (+5v, +12v, 0v).

You can even leave the linear PSU in place providing power to the coin
door bulbs and lock out coil if you like.

Try www.cpc.co.uk - they sell arcade PSU's for about £20 or so

Hmm... I think i have a spare Bob Roberts Cap Kit that'd surely cure
this.

I also damn certain I have a defender psu - and a Robotron/Sinistar PSU
sitting Here

I cant gaurantee what state theyre in - I'll have a look when I get
them in - but they'll be tradable - I'm pretty certain I've capped
kitted them already - I've personally gone the switcher way that Chad
suggesting in my Defender :)

Cheers Chad... excellent advice. I think this is my best option. Oe

Is it just me, or do Maplin seem to have a policy of never carrying in
stock the items that you really need? :)

You can also try CPC, Maplin, Farnell etc. - look on the UKVAC links
page! They should let you create and account and buy on-line if
necessary, otherwise you can probably arrange a cash sale.

I heard that didn't always work.
On a similar subject:
Do you know if Qix will run with just the capacitor mod, or is there
more needed? I know its on wiretap as "Qix to JAMMA", but theres
apparently a problem with the RAM frying if its powered up from a
switcher too many times, one of the voltages needs a delay...
Back to square one...

Not if you use mail order. Buying from their high street shops is a
waste of time, they almost never have everything I want in stock,
even really simple common items like 1/4 inch jack sockets...
Phone Maplin up (01702 554000) and do it mail order, they're VERY fast,
and almost always have the required items on your doormat next morning.
My only gripe with Maplin is they are quite expensive compared to CPC,
but the customer service and returns department are better organised,
CPC are very slack about stuff like that as several list members will
confirm. You get what you pay for I suppose :)

Hi Shaun,

I offered two original PSUs (granted neither are working - no +5V) to the group a couple of months ago for the price of the stamps. I'm sure one good one could be made from the pair.

If you want 'em LMK.

I'm going for a switcher myself once I've cleared out enough crap to get behind the machine again - I'll then have a spare working PSU available too.

Cheers,

Thats EXACTLY right Rob...
Mind you I have passed the JAMMA conversion test now... I'm onto advanced soldering techniques! :) But yes, I would really rather find as "plug and play" a solution to my current Defender problem as possible, with a bit of give and take for general wiring of connectors etc. I guess there are a LOT of newbies on here... a lot of teh confusion is the jargon!
Just wait till I get the Defender working, I have an Asteroids problem (ooer!) that is a WHOLE different kettle of fish! :)
