I spent many Friday nights playing this with 3 mates in a Southend arcade in the 80's. We were all in the process of passing our driving tests, and one of the group would drive up in whatever banger that was semi-legal that week. I remember driving at 100mph in an old 3 litre Capri along the A13, and my mate could barely see over the bonnet.

We'd park up, gave a pint and then head to the arcades, straight to Double Dragon, or if it was free, Hot Rod. We'd stay on it for hours, boosting our equipment levels and learning the circuit short cuts until it was time to go to a night club (or at least try and get in).

I'd love to play this again, such great memories. Great restoration, looks just as I remember it,

The arcade was Stardust Rolyretro, the cab in this thread is that exact one. Used to play it loads bitd, awesome game.

I can't believe I am looking at MY Hot Rod cabinet! I reckon me and my mates contributed to a significant amount of whatever wear and tear there was on the cab when you picked it up. That's made my day!

If you ever decide to sell, I can guarantee a good home.

Cheers

were there ever any good games at Fantasia arcade in southend, a bit further down from Funland & Happidrome? I don't normally go beyond the Happidrome, but i did on my previous trip down and can't help but to think that it must have had some great games there at one time?

It all blurs into one I'm afraid, we would head from one end of the seafront to the other in search of the best games. Went back recently with my kids and it was actually depressing. Not one retro cabinet on display.

Stardust was my favourite, I remember it had a Double Dragon near the Hot Rod, and at the front it always had the latest games. I remember a Space Harrier, and a full size Afterburner.

The further back you got in the arcade the more retro it got - you could stil play Galaga, Galaxians, Space Invaders and Pac Man right until the late 80's.

I wonder how many if those games just ended up being skipped to make way for more slots and dance machines?

Its been sold Roly, and is with a new owner.

I think a lot of the ones from Southend arcades glory days were skipped unfortunately :(
