i was thinking about this the other day.. wouldn't an arcade rag be great?

hmm.. a fanzine.. that would be cool... ( /me rushes off to design outlays
and shouts 'hold the presses!'...)

watch this space :)

If you wanted an american angle on it, there is a few magazines in the
states which may be of interest, i think one is called 'Gamroom' and as the
name suggests, covers every aspect of gameroom ownership and stuff..
increasingly (in the last 5 years or so) they have featured more and more
classic video stuff.. :)

[ukvac] Re: magazines
Ths US Magazine SYVYZY has just been released in the last few months.

The authors are sending me 20 copies to distribute to UKVACers -
unfortunately the prawn sent them surface so I'm still waiting for
them!

I'm hoping to distribute them either at the meet or before.

I'll naturally add people to the list of already interested parties
which will make sure you get a copy, otherwise there'll be sold off
at UKM1.8

Interested Parties so far are:
Lee Richards
Steve Cooper
Mike Coates
Phil Eaton
Dave Hosier
S.T. Shaw
XY-Man
Ade

erm.. a few more #ukvac regulars too :)

If your not on the list then email ravage @ rtype.com, preferably
with "syvyzy interest" as the subject and I'll guarantee you get a
copy (definately under £5 a issue, still not sure of the final
price)
Got some wicked articles :p

No, because it might encourage other to start collecting the boards that

Well exactly. Watch _THIS_ space, 'cos it's our very own limited
edition online magazine with daily copies delivered to everyone for next
to nothing.

RE: [ukvac] magazines
IMHO I wouldn't call you greedy, Clive, but I think that's a bit negative.

IMHO the more people collecting the more chance :
-that there will be that someone will get around to creating new XY monitors
-that SEGA will start selling brand new old boards
-that someone can fix that shagged PCB that died on you
-that 2-Bit will licence Pac-Man and start selling PCBs for under $100
-that people will start holding decent stocks of parts that we can fix stuff
with.
-that more people will archive game fixes that a proper archive will be
created

Look what video people power created with MAME? The 70's & 80's arcade scene
was just a start point for that. Do yo think that would have happened if ony
10 people were interested. Who knows what's next!

Not likely, but it means that more will languish in various states of
dereliction after being bought as trendy "projects".

>-that SEGA will start selling brand new old boards

Uh huh? (I wouldn't like to guess their minimum viable manufacturing
point)

>-that someone can fix that shagged PCB that died on you

Nope, but you could always sell it to a clueless newbie then say they
must have blown it up in a non compliant JAMMA rig.

If they licensed the game it would cost more than $100.

A viable point.

More likely that there will be more juicy fragments spread even wider.

MAME is a different kettle of phish. It's driving force wasn't only the
resurrection of classics, but also a whopping big software challenge and
the fun of reverse engineering game boards. I'll bet there are a lot of
MAME contributors who get a much bigger buzz out of the
software/hardware than playing the games.

umm.. no, i'm not sad, i was shocked by your comments to the effect of 'its

kindof selfish is it not?

I fully understand the use of smileys, but i don't believe that a smiley
cancelled out the initial comment you made, so i responded :)

Well, you obviously haven't heard of the AAM then?

Check out www.aamag.co.uk

We've been publishing a monthly mag now for 8 years, covering all
types of vintage and classic coin-op machines. Free advertising to
subscribers - usually around 200 adverts per month. (around 120
machines for sale in the current issue)

)

Re: [ukvac] Re: magazines
yeah, but there's one problem with your mag..

no offense..

But i think i can speak for all of us when we say we don't want to read
about some crusty old wooden flick-ball machine, or other 'amusement'
devices.

we are VIDEO game nut-heads.. if you did have an impressive array of
articles and information on video games, i'm sure that at the very least, I
would have heard of it by now :)

But i havn't.. so i'm guessing the video section must be only a small
section of your mag, if any at all..

This is why we need a video only fanzine-mag, there's SO much more to talk
about in a Video-game than a crusty old electro-mechanical amusement device
:)

Seriously, no offense intended, but its like telling pop memorabilia
collectors to go and buy a copy of the 'antiques roadshow monthly', i'm sure
it would have a small smattering of info, but no where near enough to
satisfy the pop collector :)

:)

The AAM is a very good monthly magazine for collectors of coin op. I should
not be telling you lot this. Sure it is mostly slots & Juke Boxes at the
moment, they combined with the Record Machine Magazine which was for the
Juke Box Collector. They are always asking for articles. I would imagine
if they could get a good article a month on Video games they would publish
it.The point I am making is ,the Magazine. is already established. If there
were enough people from every angle in op.collecting, subscribed and
contributing it would be good for all. The more Video Game collectors
subscribed and contributing would give you a fair share of the Magazine. I
am not connected in any way with AMM

Re: [ukvac] Re: magazines
Hmm... I guess it's improved lately then but I let my subscription lapse
what must be at least a couple of years ago as there was very little if
anything of interest to the video-games collector. From what I remember, all
the articles then were to do with jukeboxes and those old Allwin machines
too (BTW I've a Bell-Fruit Cascade with a very nice condition glass UFT if
anyone collects 'em). The only section really of any interest was the
SmallAds where the occasional item popped up (although I didn't ever get
anything through them) It did look like a fanzine but then again, it was
cheap and the guy that ran it seemed very enthusiastic.

[ukvac] Re: magazines
Thanks for the comments regarding the AAM

www.aamag.co.uk

Yes indeed - if I could get articles on classic/collectable videos I
would be glad to publish them. The reason there isn't much so far is
simply because I personally have very little knowledge of them, apart
from owning 4 or 5 Space Invaders and a few coffee-table sit-down
games.

I'll go through a few magazines, and past few auctions later on and
post up some prices of the stuff that's passed through our hands to
give you all an idea of what you've missed!

As Neil says, the magazine is firmly established - monthly now for 8
years. In the time I've published the AAM, several other coin-op
collecting mags have come and gone, one lasting for 1 month, one for
4 quarterly issues, another about 2 years etc. BUT we've always been
very strong on the classified adverts, which, at the end of the day,
is arguably THE most valuable feature for active collectors/restorers
like yourselves (and our current subscribers)

Lovely shiny glossy magazines are all very well, but quite simply the
sums don't add up, and sooner or later they go belly-up! We've only
ever used basic b&w print "fanzine style", and make no bones about
it, BUT we've thrived on CONTENT rather than pretty pictures... lets
face it, if you want pretty pictures there's some great books
available!

I'll go away now and do some sums too, and see what stupidly
cheap "introductory" offer I can offer you all... 4 or 5 magazines to
get you into the swing of it... if some of you are prepared to write
some articles, game reviews, perhaps technical Q&A's and, of course,
make full use of our free ads pages, I think we could happily fill 4
pages a month?

What it does need is some commitment from as many of you as possible
for a few months to establish a new section. I'm quite happy to do my
part by sending you the magazine "on trial" at, or possibly below,
cost for a few months to get things moving, if you are prepared to
support it!

Please post your thoughts, or if you'd prefer to email me directly
its steve@aamag.co.uk

Here's hoping we can make it happen!

Steve (the enthusiastic guy))

P.S. - I will be at Jukebox Madness over the weekend, probably just
inside the door dishing out flyers for the magazine etc. - come and
say hello!

totally scuppering my plans for a new UKVAC-based fanzine.. which is near
completion

:(

i dunno, at the end of the day it depends whether you want a fanzine for
videos only, (maybe a slight bit of pinball, but justan eeny weeny amount :)
Or want to read an established fanzine for other amusement devices :)
