I normally send cash - for small amounts it seems to cost almost double to
get money orders etc arranged.

Use notes, wrap in paper (so they cannot be seen through the envelope) and
if it's a reasonable amount, send by UPS or similar so you know it got
there.

if the goods are then being sent surface, wait a long long time!

I have for the first time the need to send $25 to the US in the form of a
cheque / money order. How do I go about sending money in a foreign currency
and will I get charged for this? I am sure all you E-bay bidders must know
all about it :)

Luke,

For that amount, the easiest and cheapest way is just to get some dollar
bills and post them, wrapped in two sheets of A4 paper. For added security,
send by International Recorded (costs around 2.50 on top of regular postage
charge)

Alternatively, get an International money order made out in dollars from
your bank, my bank charges 8 for the cheque and takes five working days to
get it.

Or do a Relay wire transfer, takes around seven working days to get the
other persons bank, doesn't cost them anything but costs you a tenner.
(These are NatWest prices).

Coincidently, I'm sending off 20 bucks to the US today myself, using the
first method.

Go into your bank and ask for an international money order (I _think_
that's
what it's called!). Either that or your bank can draw a cheque on a
foreign
bank for you. I can't quite remember what I got but I do remember
thinking
I wasn't going to do it again... Firstly they weren't able to give me
it on
the spot, it tooks 3 days to be mailed to me as the it had come from
head office
(or they had to clear it with New York bank or something..). And it
cost me
an extra 11-13 quid in charges!

Personally I would send $25 cash.

I ordered a PCB a couple of weeks ago that I won from Ebay and just sent US $ in a padded bag to them, I got the PCB this morning with a £38.33 tax charge. Ouch. Spent to much on the board than what it was worth.

Cheers

I've had 2 orders from the US of around $500 each in value and have not been taxed on either of them. The sender needs to know about customs laws!

i.e. you don't pay tax on certain second hard items / electronic salvage or gifted items!

WHOA WHOA! WHOA!

Before this topic goes in this direction - chaps use the web page
(http://www.egroups.com/group/ukvac/) and do a search on this very
subject - we've had loads and loads of conversations about how to avoid
tax, hows best to pay, etc etc...

If you can, an even better way is to go to your Post Office
and get to send the money directly using their new system
(name escapes me for now, I think its Moneygram).

Essentially you pay them the money in uk pounds + a handling
charge and the person in the US can pick it up from a local
outlet (who also participates in the Moneygram service). It
only takes 10 *minutes*, yes thats minutes once you have handed
over the money for the guy in the US to be able to pick up at
his side. I sent to a guy in Florida and there was something
like over 4000 places that he could have gone to to pick it up.

Well worth a try, I've used it and its fantastic. YMMV.

Cheers
