[ukvac] Please read and advise.
To everyone who advised me on my ROTJ purchase, thanks, but I know
have a bigger problem.
My wife got in last night to see me beaming with delight next to my
new toy. My smile quickley vanished - boy can women be angry
creatures.
I basically have an ultimatum, move it or lose it.
Now this machine must weigh the best part of 22 stone - 300lb.
I need to get it up a flight of stairs into my computer room.
What I need to know is, is the cab dismantleable.
If not, how can I make it lighter, I cant believe all the weight is
neccesary.
Is there some sort of weight in the bottom that can be removed, or is
the only way to make it lighter, to strip all the innards out and re-
assemble after it has been moved.
All a.s.a.p help appreciated as I can only read this post at work, as
I sold my computer to buy the machine.
Cheers
Dan

Not really, its quite a complex cab, many joins glued and nailed, it would
take alot to dismantle, and you'd probably not get it back in the same
condition.

There is no weight in the bottom. Your going to need to remove the marquee
glass, bezel glass, monitor, and the blue metal side bits at the front, also
take off the back door where the boards are, this will save you loads of
weight.

Just get a couple of mates round - when there are 3 or 4 of you it will
move quite easily - ive moved much larger cabs upstairs by bribing friends
with beer and pizza.

Cheers

Re: [ukvac] Please read and advise.
Just take out the monitor - thats the heaviest part. Then get a friend to
help you lift the machine upstairs.

Stuff the wife!! The machine will probably be more fun in the long run :)

Re: [ukvac] Please read and advise.
Managed to get an Asteroids up a (very sturdy) ladder before now ..... just
two of us! That was scary!
A few mates, beer and food should do the trick!

Regards,

Steve.

I had the same problem with a Star Wars upright - not the wife - but getting
it upstairs.

It was way too heavy for us to manage, but simply taking out the monitor,
removing the control panel and back door, made it a piece of cake.

Good luck!!

Yes, just remove the monitor.
Having taken a Jedi cab apart for to make new sections, and completely
reassembling it, taking one of those apart is the last thing you want to
do.....mind you 2 of you will be able to manage getting it up a flight of
stairs even with the monitor in.

PS Regarding your back door.
Don't use MDF, use chipboard. MDF is banned on US work sites
because of its link to cancer. Chipboard, circular saw and vinyl, back door
done.

Good luck,

Richard

RE: [ukvac] Please read and advise.
Is it your first purchase? If you're a newbie (hey, I don't know?) you're
probably walking around it an thinking “Fu*k me, that was ‘ard work getting
it through the front door and into the living room.”

You might be giving it a little shove here and there to straighten it up and
thinking “Hmm, it’s a bit of a beast.”, especially if you’re a little bloke,
like me. You’re probably a bit scared when you open the back and look in,
and it starts humming and glowing, and cracking and spitting at you. *Quick,
shut the door!*

However, sooner or later you have to over come the fear of it, and grab the
bastard with both hands and show it who’s boss. (OK, I know in your house,
it’s not you, but don’t let the machine know that...)

Go and knock up your next door neighbour and the two of you can no doubt
heave it up the stairs - put your back into it. If you’re feeling
particularly weak, whip the monitor out - it you’re careful, you can do it
without discharging it (well I do, anyway).

Obviously you need to be sure that it will fit up the stairs, but before you
know it, you’ll be almost throwing ‘em up there.

Of course there are other options:
1) Swap the contents of the bedrooms/bathroom upstairs with the
kitchen/living room downstairs and leave it where it is, in the new computer
room.
2) Be a man - tell your missus what the deal is, to stop bloody crying and
offer to close the door behind her.

Obviously number 2) is preferred.

There is a 3rd option.

Lock the wife in the garage until she shuts up and accepts you are the man
of the house, you earn more than she does and thus are entitled to put
whatever you want in the house.

I'm with Phil on this - I expect your lounge also has books in it,
potentially some crappy ornaments, and other bits and bobs that she
likes to have in there. You're only asking for a couple of square feet
of floorspace, which /really/ isn't very unreasonable. Mine was
initially a little displeased by my first cab, but she didn't DEMAND
that it go because I tucked it away in a corner. I have gradually
destroyed her will by putting more and more in the house and garage, in
tidy corners - and now she's used to them. Of course as a consession I
make sure they're perfectly aligned with walls, as far back as they'll
go, and as much as possible kept tidy, when in the lounge. The study is
a lost cause and she knows it. The garage is also my domain, but I
don't put my crap in other rooms of the house (the hallway was an
exception but I've cleared it out now).

The point is - teach the bloody woman the concept of give & take.

Hahahaha.

You're quite correct on a lot of points there.
Yes this is my first.
Yes I did think "Fu*k me, that was 'ard work getting it through the
front door and into the living room".
Yes I did think "Hmm, it's a bit of a beast."
I'm not a little bloke, but Christ does it matter, it's definately
heavier than I thought it would be.
Humming,glowing,cracking...i'm a component level repair engineer so
electrics SHOULDN'T prove too much of a problem, but then again I
don't do any monitor work - are they easy to remove and discharge?

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T DISMANTLE THE CABINET - YOU'LL REGRET IT!
My star wars upright has now been dis/re-assembled 3 times and it's now like
a wobbly jelly.

I second that, my gauntlet has been flatpacked, moved in my car twice, then
has been in different rooms in the house, it's now hanging on by a thread,
going to get round to a full re-build eventually with ply instead of the
crappy chipboard atari use

Re: [ukvac] Please read and advise.
What? ....... risk locking the wife in the garage where arcade machines are
stored, as well as the Axe and Chain saw!

:)
